I visited Cardiff Bay for the end of summer festival 2008, it's a three day event starting today and the weather was horrible - But at least it didn't rain.

Anyway, on the very small bandstand there was a group called The Cloghoppers - Below are some of the pictures I took.

All comments welcome, I obviously need to learn;

Nice! I love female banjo players ... how come she held it so oddly?

Sharp photo work.
Only flaw I see is number four the players are a little darker than the other shots.
I've never seen a bass banjo before...

Thank you both.

If you look at the female in photo one, you might be able to make out that she has a thick bamboo stick attached to the banjo - I believe she also plays the Chello, so I presume she finds it easier to play the banjo this way.

The day wasn't great, you might be able to see the sky in picture 1 & 4 - So it was a struggle for me, but it the majority came out OK.

Thanks Again,

Jason

Is there a such thing as a bass banjo? Those are some heavy strings.

fun set. a bit of a pippi longstocking flavor to the lass.

that pesky green pole did you no favors, but i think you did a nice job. as noted one was darker a bit too much.

I think I'll have to have a look at the exposure on the one pic then, thank you.

The band stand was small and awkward to be honest, the following picture was taken with a wider lens and should give you a better idea of what it was like;

It looks like a Bass Banjo to me, she has a thumb rest attached to the vellum, that would kill any ordinary banjo (soundwise) and the strings are just too thick to finger chords for any length of time.

I take it you know about these instruments going by your avatar and username.

Can you actually buy a bass banjo, or would you have to modify one to become like the above?

I have never seen or heard of a Bass Banjo before this thread, but it is obvious that

that is what this is from the thumb rest and the angle of playing, she plays it like a string Bass in the upright position, it may be a one off invention I don't know.

My experience is with Ukulele/Banjos, which are like 4 string Banjos in every respect except that they are smaller, and use the tuning system of the wooden ukulele, what we used to call the Hawaiian ukulele, being based on the Banjo they are louder and usually played with a different technique than the wooden uke

Nice shots. Did they do any circus tricks?
