The ISO 1600 Sample with EXIF Data (http://www.canon.icp.dog-cr.jp/products/camera/eos/50d/images/sample_50d-4.jpg) is amazing.

I think someone copied the offical 50D webpages from Canon China, and hosted the pages at a private server in Japan. That's why some of the other links don't work. Either that, or this is the most elaborate hoax I have ever seen.

Is that 18-200 lens on the camera?

Sheesh! It's an ISO 1600 sample... cut it some slack. :)

There are just too many technical diagrams on that link. Sample pictures of Digic4, brand new display layout, diagrams of the LCD technology. Waaay too complicated for someone to fake. It would take one truly sad individual to do all that in his spare time.

I think it's legit.

Oh god, I hope this is legit. A 50D and 5D MkII announcement in less than a month would be exciting stuff. Extra excitement if that lens is truly a 18-200.

I haven't a clue. Can anybody read Chinese? There's a description for CA mode here:

I'm fluent in spoken Chinese, but not written. However I recognise the last two characters as 'zi dong', which means Auto. So I suspect it's some sort of Custom Auto mode.

Apparently the website resolves to a server in Los Angeles somewhere (per DP Review), so it may not be the genuine artcle.

Unfortunately I ain't holding my breath for anything which associates itself with the Green Box mode.

I've done a little more digging into that site, and found a bit more information.

CA Mode = Creative Auto Mode = Really, really dumb mode.

Essentially, it's a mode for people who don't understand photography. The main screen will show a simplified menu. There are icons for "brighter! darker!" for people who don't understand exposure compensation. There are icons for "blurrier background! sharper background!" for people who don't understand the concept of aperture and depth of field.

Other bits of information from the webpage:

There's RAW (15.1 MP @ 20.2 MB). There's sRAW1 (7.1 MP @ 12.6 MB). And there's sRAW2 (3.8 MP @ 9.2 MB).

High ISO Noise Reduction now includes four settings: Standard, Weak, Strong, and OFF. Using the "Strong" mode may reduce the camera's continuous shooting performance.

There's user customizable focus calibration. There's the range from ISO 100 to 3200, expandable to 6400H and 12800H.

Geez, the 50D is what the 40D should have been... Anyway, if Canon maintains the ~$1200 MSRP price for the xxD bodies, it should compete well with Nikon.

OT: I hope Canon's been working on a new full-frame body, this better not be the only thing Canon announces within the next month.

Looks like the best 1.6x yet,
key improved features are the high density sensor, for cropping bird shots,
focus adjustment, UDMA CF, hi-res LCD and auto ISO like the XSi.

For me it will come down to just how much more detail the sensor can extract over the new 5D sensor,
if its worth buying the 50D. I assume the new 5D will have all the new features as well.

Can anyone make sense of what this page talks about ?. Google translate does not make any sense but it sounds like in-camera IS to me !!

"Canon independent development and production of the SLR camera lens for built-in Anti-Shake structure: image stabilizer (IS), built-in vibration-detection Shoudou gyroscope. According to the extent jitter accurately adjusted the lens of the optical components so that the light refraction to prevent the image dithering direction, which is unique to Canon's advanced technology. In-camera Anti-Shake function in the viewfinder image is no longer jitter, so that photographers can accurately image and focus; can also under the lens of the individual characteristics of the appropriate adjustment, which is the fuselage Anti-Shake function does not have the advantage . Photography, Pi Sheti clear and easily identified, sold satisfied with the photos."

If its true i hope this thing makes it into the new 5D as well..

That's just the in lens stabilization system I believe.

IIRC it's the newer simplified IS module used in (for example) the 40D kit lens.

More accurate, real speaker, translations have been posted but you can do some simple substitutes to the above paragraph and see that it is talking about Canon's in LENS stabilization.

Replace "fuselage" with "body" in the last sentence...

>>can also under the lens of the individual characteristics of the appropriate adjustment, which is the body Anti-Shake function does not have the advantage

Saying that an in-body IS system is at a disadvantage because with Canon's system they tailor it to the individual needs of each lens and focal length

I suspect that IS is a diagram of the system in the 18-200mm lens that the 50D seems to have mounted. I guess that'll be the new kit lens instead of the 17-85 or the 28-135, both of which have IS. I guess the approach by Canon to combat in body IS by others is to only have kit lenses with IS.

I downloaded the sample images and I'm finding that ISO 400 night shot of the building to be fairly noisy. I guess time and real measurements will tell. 20MB's for a RAW image seems huge. I guess everyone that upgrades from lower res bodies will need more memory cards and maybe a faster computer to handle all that extra information.

the site doesn't belong to Canon. it's a 3rd party web site and it's not controlled by canon what so ever. Now that it's asking for authorization means that they have taken the web site down.

My guess is that whoever is hosting the pages has exceeded the allowed bandwidth use and had to stop further use. Or Canon got it closed
