Nice shots there buddy. It's killing me. I'm at work and I can't get to mine until this evening.

This one was pretty docile. It was sitting on the ground and we were no more than about 10 feet from it. I'm sure we could have gotten closer had we wanted to. I saw about 8 this morning so they are not that hard to find.

Ian, this is such a great find that I believe that we should celebrate by treating ourselves to poutine sometime this weekend.

Oh, man! Great shots you got there, Ian! You should see me now. My skin is turning all green (from envy).

Sheldon, looking forward to your shots, too. Did you have your 500 with you? I'm thinking not since you got to within 10 feet of the owl, unless you just wanted a shot of one of the eyes.

Hi Leo. I had the lens with me this morning but it was too cold, about -20C this morning, need I say more. We were close enough anyway that I didn't need the reach.

Don't the French Canadians have some good recipies for Owl? Owl du jour?

But you would have to use free-range owls. You wouldn't want those farm-raised owls.

You guys are cruel. You're just trying to make Scott feel bad. Boy, you talk about rubbing it in.

There are many recipes for Poutine that contain a reasonable facsimile for meat. I suppose that owl could be substituted for say skunk, and probably with the same results. :) :) :) :)

Great Gray Owl?

Does that count as white meat or red meat?

Couldn't you just stick one on a pole and carry it around to use as a gray card?

I notice that you lightweights can only get to within 10 feet. There's no doubt that I could get to within 8 feet. At least 9.

Some how I think that he is not quite 18% Grey. Anyway, they are a little big to stick on a stick (excuse the pun) unless you feel like getting the living bejeebers clawed out of ya.

Only 10 feet cause the 400 prime and 25mm extension tube would not focus any closer. Tomorrow I'm slapping the 100mm macro on and going to get real close :) :) :) :)
Ever see the dirt under a Great Grey Owl's toe nails? :) :)

Ian,

Great shots like always. I really like the first one. The colors and feathers look great. The blue/white snow background looks nice contrasted with a fluffed up owl.

You guys have to get a picture of this guy with his eyes wide open or else people are going to accuse you of drugging these birds. How else could you get so close?

Omigawd! Stunning images, beautiful animal, gorgeous gorgeous work!

I am soooooooo ^%$#@%& jealous! My wishlist is Cougar, Owl, and Bald Eagle. I can hear the owl from around here, but have never ever seen it.

What's your address, I'm coming over.

Dave,
I watched this guy for over 30 minutes this morning and the best I got was that squinty eyed look. I plan on spending a lot more time there tomorrow and will not come home until I get a "Eyes Wide Open" shot:):):)

Ed,
The 400 f/5.6 is the best there is for the money. It is so fast with AF and so damn sharp.

Then shouldn't you be going out there very, very early in the morning while it's still dark out? That's when they're the most active, aren't they. They're like vampires. During the day, they just want to take it easy and have some shut-eyes!
