Ive had my Digital Rebel for about 3 months now and everything had been going great until today.

I was just playing around w/ the camera today and this was the first time I had shot in RAW mode. I was just tryin it out. I took about 27 pictures and then I went to take another pictyre and the camera froze up. I can hear the shutter but then the camera freezes up. So I turn off the camera and the CF writing is in process, takes about 10-12 seconds before the camera turns off. I try then to turn the camera ON and nothing happens, so I take out the battery and place it back in. The camera turns on and I also hear the shutter realese back. I try and shoot again and it freezes up everytime. I took out the CF card and placed it back in and I was able to fire off about 3 shots then it froze again. Tried my other Cf card, still the same problem. Ive taken about 7,000 pictures with the camera.

I have no idea what went wrong, nothing like that had ever happend before. Has any one else had theses problems, or might know what going on? I'd really appreciate any help.

That's pretty weird... does that happen only when you shoot in RAW? Are you using the hack?

First of all, make sure that you have Mirror Lockup disabled.

Try formatting again the CF Card ....
(I would call canon too...)

Will they work on the camera with the hack? I would think that would void the warranty.

You can put back the firmware it came with the camera. It is available at:

http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/eosdigital/E3kr_firmware-e.html

And if you have problems uploading that one... you can call Canon too :)

Did you try formatting the CF card?

Another thing you can try is changing the lens (or de-attaching and attaching it again). Keep us posted man!

Next time it happens, try dismounting the lens before doing anything else and see if the shutter's still open, or the mirror's still up. This might give you/Canon a clue as to where to start looking for a fix. But it does sound like you're going to be digging out the box it came in and heading to UPS.

- I could be completely wrong, but I don't think the DRebel has mirror lockup abilities.

With or without the hacked firmware?

sorry for the late post....

That same night I went out and shot a basketball game, no problem whatsoever, I shot at Large/Fine.

The next day I started playing around w/ the camera again and put it to RAW...guess what?...It locked up again. I took out the battery about 2 times and since then I havent had no more lock-ups. I have no idea whats going on, but llately it seems to only lock-up when shooting in RAW mode.

....thanks again for all the help.

Just curious; have you tried a different CF card? Or re-formated the one you're using?

I have two cards (same make/model) and yes they've both been formatted. Although I havent kept track if the problem is only occuring on one cf card or both...........

So since you can repeat it apparently at will, is it locking with the shutter open, the mirror up but the shutter closed, or with both apparently at the normal at-rest position? The RAW-only scenario suggests that it might be a problem in writing the large amount of data, but what else is happening may further localize it as to writing to buffer or writing to card. And definitely see if it's tied to one or the other card. Since you didn't mention it, I have to assume that there weren't any error messages on the LCD; please correct me if I'm wrong.
