Now that will be a killer lens!

lol, with a 3 or 4 stop IS, it would be like you're shooting at f/0.7 or f/0.5

they should put the same IS as they have on the 200 f/2 .. and it would probably hold the same price tag

er, no.

the 'IS stop' refers to shutter speed reduction w/o ensuing motion blur, not opening the aperture even larger.

shooting an IS lens @ f/2.8 will yield the same DoF regardless of whether the IS is on or off.

yeah, i meant the shutter speed increase, not all the characteristics of a wider aperture. Thats why i wrote "like" instead of writing "that would open aperture to 0.5" :-S

With some clever optical engineering they might be able to pull it off... who knows!

I will be happy with 24-70L f/2.8 IS - this will be in $1400+ range already

Not sure I can afford the f/2

why not a 24-105 2.8 IS?

Yeah!!! that will work!

Hey, I'd definitely dig a 24-70 f/2 IS... though it's gonna be huge compared to the current brick unless they make some nice breakthroughs! Give me a 24-85 f/2 with wonderful IQ and I'll sell off my 85mm 1.8 quite happily :D

Yeah!!! that will work!

... and would be even heavier than the brick!

I've read somewhere that Sigma is releasing a new 24-70 f1.8

i've just started a new thread here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=561646)

24-70 is most nice for fullframe with 70-200, IS would be nice for 24-70 as well

A 24-70mm f2 with IS?? The regular one is already huge and called the Brick, so would the new model be called the Cinder Block???

if made I nominate this lens to be called 'Cinder-Block'

it would probably be a nice lens... but I have to win the lottory to be able to afford it! LOL

A 24-70 f/2L IS? Wow thats going to break my neck. I would say thanks but no thanks, what is currently on the market is more than enough. If I need the IS, I would just go for the 24-104 f/4L IS since its got a good length, IS and main thing, WEIGHT.

Not at the hope of being flamed but the thing is, people always want more and sometimes never happy with what is available. Personally the cost of the changes are going to be huge.

A really good lens would be 24-105 f1.4 L USM IS.

That's one big light sucking momma!

Hell I'll pass on the F2. Just put IS into the current f2.8 model and I'll play. :-)

The Anvil?

We are talking 950g (1-1/2lbs) for the original the f2 *might* be around 3lbs ? The 70-200f/2.8 is about 3lbs and is used by sports photogs for hours...so I would love to have either a f2 IS or /2.8 IS ...:)

I don't think it will be too long before someone comes out with a constant f/2 normal zoom!

The Anvil?

Or how about:

The Canon Ball?

If Canon actually made an f/2 standard zoom it would create a huge draw; there's no competition. Narrow DoF, twice the light gathering ability, and in one of the most-used focal ranges.

My take is it will never happen. To much encroachment on the land of primes. Even though people will say primes are sharper, there will be many that will forgo primes. This eats into sales. Not going to happen.

Unless you are Olympus trying to get market share.

It will happen.... but their will be a performance shift in the primes..... with a lower and better IQ. When the Zooms improve.... the Prime's will follow!
