A fun little game to help us develop our processing skills while we pursue the ever popular and trendy "Dave Hill Look".

To learn more about Dave, you can visit his site at http://www.davehillphoto.com/.

Some may ask, "What is the Dave Hill Look." Well, it may be best defined as gritty, hyper sharp, little if any bokeh, and very high contrast. Dave Hill's work relies a great deal on his lighting techniques, which may not be duplicated effectively in the target photos that appear in the contests.

So do your best with what you have.

Here are the rules (the bulk of which are borrowed from the before/after threads, with appreciation.)

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 48hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Dave Hill Effect #4".

This is all about having fun so have at it!!! Good Luck!!!

THIS CONTEST WILL END AT 6 PM, THURSDAY, AUGUST 28th!!!

(PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO POST YOUR EDIT STEPS THAT YOU TOOK TO ACHIEVE THIS LOOK)

right, I'm not seeing the photo either.

I replaced the image and it appears to be showing on my machine as well as my wife's machine. I will extend the edit period to make up for the loss in time.

Again, my apologies. It was showing on my machine all this time ??

so I tried to do the Dave Hill effect using the flickr page here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/72157594577686705/

I used different numbers instead of the ones provided and a couple of other levels layers to bring out the highlights and midtones...

well I had trouble with artifacting during this conversion so I freely admit I'm not entirely happy the results but:

I cloned out the sensor dust
used viveza to lighten up areas that I wanted lighter
used the topaz plug in on a duplicate later and adjusted opacity to my liking
then cloned out as many artifacts as I could
then tried a glamor glow filter (nik) to soften the look
used Kubota's creamsickle action w/adjustments and a minimal NR to try to soften the rest of the artifacts.

Yes I knew the dust spots were there. You are on the ball! How do you like Viveza? I had the 30 Day trial and it seemed a little overpriced for what you get. Has it been worth it? I am reconsidering.

I altered one of the copies myself and I may post it at the end. I realize I can't win because I am the Judge (really because I only win when I am the only entrant!)LOL

Cheers!

Thank you for the images that you manipulated, or the comments you contributed to this 3rd photo contest.

The Dave Hill "look" usually depends on lighting control in the making of the image and multiple light sources. In many cases, Hill uses a number of similar images from which to clone desirable components. The image supplied takes away that opportunity and you have been left to apply whatever you could to get the "feeling" engendered by it ("the look"). I thought this Sunflower image would be fun to work with even though there were no human faces. I was visualizing the flower faces as substitutes.

To me many of these looks have a similarity. I think that the look of Andrze Dragan, Joey Lawrence, Jill Greenburg, and even HDR in general contribute to the feeling.

I thought both of the entries were appealing. DM's entry had more color. Permagin's entry had more smoothness, but several flower petals and sky spots had 255 readings in one or more channels. Because DM's image had a number of pixel blocks visible,I hesitated, but it had a more gritty look and I did choose it.

Please carry on with posting according to the directions and carry the contest forward. Thanks again.

I still am wondering where the original #3 Hill contest went. I know it was here as I was working on the picture. So much for posting my workflow...

I am not aware of the image you are talking about. The image below was posted here 3 days ago after a glitch or two. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?
