Make sure the battery is fully charged.
Fully charge the battery, go to a dark area, and set on auto, and try it. If it doesn't work, send it back.

And if you mean it's not opening when you press the little "flash" button, make sure the camera is set to one of the Creative zone modes.

...hmm
maybe I should check mine too :)
You can always get an external flash and not worry about it ;)

A friend's 10D had the opposite problem, the thing would not close. Our fix was to remove lens and battery, turn camera on then off again, let it sit for 15 minutes and then put it back together.
After doing that, it functionaed properly. I am assuming, by doing this, we were doing the equivilant of re-booting a Windows based compter...It worked and life went on. Don't know why..

I have the same issue with our 10D. Flash worked fine last time it was used. Battery is completely charged up, and I tried GenEOS's technique of trying to "re-boot". No luck. I put it in auto mode, went into a dark room, and got no flash. Cannot get it to pop up in a creative mode either.
I know that this built-in flash is not very good, but it sure is convenient for some of the people here (who are not photographers but occasionally use the camera) who don't want to have to worry about external flashes and the like.
Any ideas on what is wrong?
Thanks a bunch. Just found this site today, and have already learned a great deal from it.
