Here is a thread that I started to debate between the 100-400 IS and the "Bigma" 50-500....might be of interest. From all reviews I have read the 50-500 seems to be a quite adequate lens....most reviews say its a little soft on the short end, and at 500 but otherwise quite sharp and comparable to the 100-400. Check out the review link as well.....

Great lens. Here are a few Bigma images. There are more in my other gallerys.

I think the highlights are a little blown out. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif

I have a Sigma 50-500 and it is one of my most used lenses. I have used it for both action sports and wildlife with great success. I often use it with a set of extension tubes for butterflies and other small subjects that won't let you get very close.
Be aware that it is heavy, prone to zoom creep and uses expensive 86mm filters.
I usually try to shoot it from a tripod, but often shoot it hand held for sports. In dull weather I prefer the Canon 70-200/2.8, but when the light is good I usually switch to the Sigma 50-500.
