Now did you really think I would post a pic of something that nasty? BTW, who needs a macro setting on the S1IS - close enough for me!

I disagree...I would love to see a macro setting on my wife's S1. Not that I dislike the camera, but a macro setting would be nice. ...guess you can't have everything in a $400 camera. No comment on your balls.

Would macro enable even closer shots? I seem to be focusing pretty well - here's another

I think we may be able to go more closer engaging macro focus, depends on the camera though.
Check this Macro I posted earlier in critique section, is as shot, i.e. not touched in anyway. This one was 10 cm far at the most. I am not sure how far you were while shooting the pen....

By the way, Most of the compact camera lens tends to close down f value towards telephoto. Macro allows you to shoot with you being closer to the subject. Other way to get close is to zoom in, which is fine however you always may not have precise control on the F value, depending on camera lens & the focal lenght you have to shoot to appear "close". For instance My G3 is max 3.0 at full telephoto while Panasonic dmz fz 20 is 2.8 throughout the focal length. This in turn may also call for tripod as a must

This being said, i do agree I know almost nothing in photography & dnt know your camera settings for the shots posted or about your camera itself, SO if I may be mistaken. Please feel free to correct me :) But I think having the ability to engage macro mode definately helps ...

Actually - I am able to get quite close (3-4 inches) when taking these shots. I'd have to check exif info for the other settings - usually just shoot them in P-mode with flash off (defaults to f-2.8 at a lower shutter speed - bracing on the table and the IS helps the shots

Thats not bad...but a true macro, like a friend's fuji s7000, with good light, will let him get as close as 1-2cm. to his subject.

2-3 inches is pretty good actually. Do your camera have a manual mode ? try focussing manually, you may be able to get more closer at full aperture, for instance I once shot at about ~4-5 cms in with manual focussing.
However f2.8 will give you a very shallow depth of field. But it all depends what effect you want to create :-) so as long as you are happy, enjoy shooting :-)

Here's one of my watch from approx 1" away - auto focus, 200ISO, f 2.8, 1/10th second, hand held but braced on table, room bulb and a workshop flashlight to illuminate - made me see the smudge of dirt on the crystal!

Its a Nice Macro Geeeyejo !
I am impressed ! S1 does seems to have great potential shooting close-ups.

BTW, did you ever tried Av for Macro with a higher f number ? How good is IS then ?

Thanks Raj,

I have not really played too much with it as I only have had the camera for about one month. Been focusing (no pun intended) on the family, pets, etc. - always like portraits, candids - the human element of photography. The IS appears to work quite well on long telephoto shots as well as indoors with low (even 1/5 sec) exposures if you hold or brace your hands reasonably still.
I was actually a bit disappointed with the camera at first (due to low light auto focusing difficulties) but learned about hyperfocal settings and now capture near 100% of indoor shots with great focus.
Playing with all the settings on the S1 has really got me pinning for a Dig SLR though!

Hey can you give me the exact settings for using hyperfocal settings ?
I never could set it up properly on my G3 ....

Geeeyejo

I go to av mode, f5.6, flash set to auto, set manual focus to about 3 ft, ISO 50, IS on (doesn't affect Hyperfocal and not really needed at 1/60th with flash but doesn't hurt) Lens at widest (i.e. no telephoto or it messes up the Hyperfocal setting) Then set as a custom setting. I just turn to "C" and point and shoot indoors.

Hey you changed the way you look :-)
Thanks a lot, I will try the same with my G3 tonight at home :-)

Cheers
