I like your way of thinking!
Plus, prices are never around the msrp that Canon sets. They usually fall $100 or so on Amazon in a few months.

I wouldn't expect a rebate one month after it's release. I'm thinking about buying this body as well, so I'm hoping the prices fall.
If past repeats itself, the initial first batch will be sold to folks who want to be the first to have it at MSRP then drop a little steadily.

Do you think its worth the upgrade from a 40D
Id really would like to see how much better the ISO/Noise will be improved from the 40D to 50D.

Depends on what you value, I guess. But for your average photographer, I doubt it'd be worth the upgrade. It might be better to save more for the 5D mkII.

Very true, im sure it will have similar technology to this new 50D.
ISO/Noise is super important to me, so i'm on the edge of my seat waiting for canon to come out with something new and improved in that area.

I am not very savvy when it comes to the technical specs/parts of a digital camera, but I was under the impression that adding more megapixels to the same size sensor we already have in the 40D would actually degrade the IQ. Is this a different sensor in the 50D?
Sorry to sound ignorant. I'm just curious how it works.

I'm your average photographer, and to me it's a VERY significant upgrade. I'm already contemplating how I'll go about getting one, and whether I'll be patient enough to wait for the prices to drop.
The difference between the 40D and 50D is like night and day to me. It answers so many of the cries for change and improvement that were made about the 40D: More Megapixels! Better Noise! More noise control options! More AF options in live view! Make the LCD vga-resolution! Lens AF microadjustment!
If everything pans out, it's a huge upgrade. I can't believe there are people saying "ohhh it's not a significant upgrade." That's bs! You'll want one when it comes out, if you don't already. The difference from 20D to 30D wasn't very significant. The difference from 30D to 40D was mildly significant. The difference from 40D to 50D is much more significant than either of those updates. Come on, 15 megapixels with 1+ stops better noise handling! Not a big upgrade?

If this camera really comes out for around $1300, I think it will be a direct adversary to the D300. It might not be quite as good of a body (although I prefer canon to Nikon ergonomics), but for a little bit cheaper and the opportunity to buy the cheaper telephoto canon lenses this is a great opportunity. As someone with a prevailing interest in wildlife shooting, I am going to stick with canon for this reason. I think that I'll save my money for newer and better lenses, but I see good things in Canon's future, and that is all I really care about. It is good to feel like I bought into a line that will be a good investment in my future photography.

And what would the D300 have over the 50D besides the high number of autofocus points and a higher claimed shutter life? Only the things Nikon has always had over Canon: Built-in remote flash triggering, better battery life meter and better adjustment of the self timer.

They really should have added the built in remote flash triggering to the 50D if you ask me. Other than that, I think that the 50D is just as good or better than the D300 myself.

Should make your wedding photography easier I bet if you can pick one up;)
The 40D would also make a great backup camera.

Buy the 50D and 18-200mm IS kit for $1699 and sell the lens for $500 ($199 less than MSRP) and then you have a50D for $1100.
Nice.

I went into Penn Camera today in Rockville MD and ask about the if the new 5D has been announced yet. The guy said no but this morning Canon announced a new 50D and I placed an order for it immediately. When they get a price I am running there and paying up so I will have it in hand when it reach the public. If Canon is as fast as they were with the 40D; then I should have it within the next month.

the 50D is slated for release in October. I don't think they'll bring that date forward....

The sensor and processor are both new, APS-C which is a larger sensor, the DIGIC IV processor will have the latest technology for noise reduction.
the fact that the 5D price will drop to about 1799 the 50D's 3200 iso is going to be pretty close to the 5D's 3200, by my guessing. Which means the 5DII FF is going to going to have to deliver big time.

Lower fps rate means this upgrade would be worthless for me for the majority of my shooting, surfing, but the increased noise handling would be great for my band shoots.
Damn you Canon!

I don't see how losing less than a shot a second could be all the detrimental, even for sports use. The speedy shooting is definitely nice, but I would think that having 15MP resolution is worth the slight decline in speed. The Digic IV must be a pretty quick processor to pull that off. I would definitely prefer those specs if the noise level can match that of the 5D at around 3200 to the 40D's 6.5 FPS. We'll have to wait and see.

Damn you Canon!
technically, the 50d has a lower frame-rate...
but c'mon! 6.3 vs 6.5?!?
it's hardly a deal-breaker! :)
