Yup, when the exposure is on the 1DMIII works very nicely at ISO3200! Nice captures! Welcome to POTN.

Nicely done. According to a lot of people on here though you should get teh 50D as it would have looked better.
That first shot is sweet!

Very good composition, subjects and colors...
You've got some exceptional gear to help you get these tough low light shots... and you certainly picked the right moments to capture... Cheers.
By the way, who is this in the pics and where is this from?

Awesome shots. I can't believe how clean those are at 3200. The lights in that first shot are really incredible. Thanks for sharing these.

Thanks all for the comments - the group is Sven Ingvars - they are a very popular Swedish group who first recorded in 1961 so I am told. There are two original members - the guy in the spotlight is the son of one of them. They have adapted over the years and there were a lot of young people at the gig which was in a small place called Munkedal in west Sweden. Even if you did not love the music there was no denying the were good entertainers. Here's a couple more:

Very nice for ISO3200. Does the ISO3200 on the 30D/40D/50D differ to that on the 1DMIII (so theoretically if I had the same lens on my 30D I could get similar results)?

simple answer - no.
they are very different sensors and a different crop size. the 1dmkIII is going to have much better performance at 3200. No one really knows yet about the 50D, but I expect it is marginally better than the 40D at 3200 and still pretty far behind the 1DMKIII.
That being said, if you get the exposure right, 3200 on a 40D will look very good on web-size images and small prints.

Here's a shot I took with the 40D @ iso 3200:

It can get good results there, but generally speaking I don't like to go above iso 1600 with this particular camera unless it's the absolutely only way I'll get the shot.

Thanks for the info.
I don't think I've had a single usable ISO3200 shot, although this may be due to technique and/or lens as well - I have only tested it when ISO1600 wasn't enough (handheld), but the highlights seem to blow out quite easily.

Yeah, and that may partially be due to the type of lighting you are shooting in. when I am forced to go to 3200 in concert photography, I usually either blow out the highlights or much of the rest of the picture is too dark. I tend to agree, there is less leeway as you go higher in ISO. Lots of chimping and also - I find the more I do it, the more I can look at a scene and be able to guess accurately what the exposure should be.

Me too! In fact tomorrow I'll post some recent ISO 3200 shots myself. That's right, from a 20D. I have no idea how it manged it.
Nice shots though! First one is my fav.
