Not sure if this is a marketplace post... but here goes. Looking for a good place to shop for photo gear in Las Vegas. I'm going there in a few months and wouldn't mind finding a deal or two. I guess I should explain I'll be coming down from Canada where gear just seems to cost more, notwithstanding the exchange.
Thanks in advance for any info.

There are only two options in Vegas that are real photo stores.
Casey's Camera on Tropicana, about 2 miles east of Las Vegas Blvd. (702) 736-0890. They have a decent selection, though not great, and their prices are okay, but again not great. I would say their prices are full retail prices, some things maybe a tad high. They can't be compared to B&H or other online places, but they aren't usually overpriced either. The people there are pretty good, they are generally nice.
Sahara Camera on East Sahara just before Eastern Ave. (702) 457-3333. A larger selection than Caseys, and I haven't been there in a long time but would guess similar prices. Part of why I don't usually go there is because I have had to deal with rude sales people on too many occassions, so I stopped shopping there. But if you can get past that, it is an okay place. And those sales people may no longer work there too.
That said, I buy most my stuff online from B&H or Samy's (www.samys.com). If you have the chance, I would recommend a drive to LA (Southern California) or surrounding area to visit a Calumet Photo or Samy's Camera. I have never been into one of their stores, but would expect them to have a good selection, and they have good prices on most things.

Thanks for the extensive info. Looks like shopping in Vegas is a bust. Oh well, guess I'll just have to catch a couple shows. Tough compromise! *s*

I was just at sahara camera approx 2 weeks ago, I was there on vacation, they do have the usual selection of filters and such, they don't have much on canon gear. But I did have a short conversation with one of the sales people who had just converted from NIKON to Canon with the 20D.

As far as I know, the only good deal in Vegas is the buffet.

Boy you said a mouthfull there, and those sales people are still there at Sahara. I mainly order from out of state, or get good deals from friends...We are really lacking here for a good camera store.....HMMMmmMMm:idea:
22 What are you looking for in particular? Maybe we can point out a place or two close....You could take a day trip to Canoga Park Ca. (Los Angeles) and Check out Canoga Camera.

Being A Vegas Local I can say good things about both of the stores. I visit Sahara more do to the kindness they have extended towards me & it's closer to my home. They have been willing to cut a deal quicker than the other store. The market is not designed for locals but tourist who come in from other countries & see a better bargain than where they're from. Sahara other big feature is the in house printlab for color & B&W. Casey's has also a friendly staff with a different selection from the other store. I have heard them both send clients to the other if they was not able to help. Overall if you looking for rock bottom pricing B&H, Samy's or some of the other online retailers will be better.

I agree! Everyone can have a bad day, but in general I've been served well by both Sahara & Casey's.
For Canon equipment at Sahara, see Karl.
At Casey's, see Jerry.

Probably 95% of the questions of the form "I'm going to be visiting <insert US city HERE> in the near future. Can someone recommend a good camera store there?" can be (and usually are) properly answered in the form of:
"I know of only <insert tiny number HERE> halfway decent camera shops in <CITY>. They are <NAMES and ADDRESSES>. But you'd probably be much better off with mail order from B&H."
No, it's not always true. But it's almost always true.
