They played it hard and tough. Wins for Penn and Princeton over the Yale lady bulldogs. Shot mostly at ISO 1600, 85/1.8 lens @ f/2.0 and 1/320 sec. Captured RAW...still working on dealing with color corrections for the rapidly changing color/temperature of the mercury gym lighting.

Great shots, Woody. Really nice! I'm going to get me one of those 85 f/1.8 lenses if B&H can ever get them in stock.

How close were you to the action? Looks like you were right there under the net. :)

I'm two steps and a spin move away from a dunk shot. But they never pass me the ball. :D:D

Good work maderito. I particularly like the nice tight crops.

PacAce and gmen -

Thanks for the comments.

The 85/1.8 seems to be a favorite for many shooting bbal although it's a little long for action right under the hoop (which is where I sit).

Women spend a lot of time passing on the perimeter with an occasional drive to the hoop and a few jump shots. There are not a lot of chances to capture classic hoop action - so I wind up shooting and croppig tight to capture intensity (which can be ferocious :) ).

Thanks.

The posted pics were taken with a 1DMkII, but I have used the 85/1.8 on a 1.6 crop camera for bbal with excellent results. Now that you mention it, I'm probably positioning myself closer to the baseline (within 3 feet) than I was when using a 20D.

I wouldn't call the difference (1.6 vs. 1.3 crop) "big" for this kind of shooting (as compared to landscape work where the difference is dramatic).

Nice shots! Did you do any post processing for noise?

I use Neat Image - at very low intensity (roughly 50% less than the default settings). Without Neat Image, the noise would not be noticed in the original shots if viewed as small web JPEGS or 4X6 prints - as long as the original image is properly exposed. Underexposed images definitely improve with careful noise reduction via Neat Image or Noise Ninja.
