Hi,
I'm just about to change my photo gallery over from the previous software I was using to EE. I also want to redo my photos from the RAW files and I'm just wondering what sizes people use for their small, medium and large versions?
Also, after tweaking the photos in Photoshop if I manually save them in exactly the same size as specified in the resize options does that mean they will not be resized by GD (don't have imagemagic) and mess up any sharpening that I have done but the various thumbnails will be created?
Regards
Mike

Hi Mike,
If you save your photos in one (large) size in PS, and you want use that size in EE then you should
a) check that size path is correct (and its ftp works)
b) select resize method NONE for that path - this means EE will not do anything else than move it to correct location with FTP.
c) select that path when uploading
You thumbs can still be made with GD/2, just set the paths, ftp and sizes in path editor and select those thumb paths for exhibition (in exhibition editor).

Ah! I see :-)
So I can define Large (GD 800) for ones that I want EE to resize to 800 and I can define Large (No Resize) for ones that I've manually tweaked and prepared to already be 800 and then they aren't affected by GD resizing.
Amazing software, I paid $35 the other day as I was so impressed by my initial tests with it
Thanks

For my three sizes I use 800, 600, and 300 at the longest side.
I Resize all my photos to 800 at the longest in CS and then watermark them and then upload.
I then choose, no sharpen, no resize for 800 and for the correct path.
For 600, Resize and sharpen and for the correct path.
For 300, Resize and sharpen and for the correct path.
Here are the values I use for sharpening
Sharpen: Check amount: 1 treshold: .3 sigma: .2 radius:.5
Here is what mine looks like : http://www.ekreating.com
I am still working on my main site, but have the portfolio and galleries up.

Hi Eric
Thanks for that.
I was thinking of using 800, 600 and 400 but after looking at your site I might use 300 for the small size instead.
Do you manually resize and sharpen the smaller photos yourself with those settings before uploading, or is that for ImageMagic? I only have GD2 on my provider's server and I can't see those setings.
Re you comment of working on your main site - is there anyway of including thumbnails of either random, top rated or most recent photos on non EE web pages? I'd like to have some ordinary html / php pages that aren't served up through EE on my site, but would like to be able to include the appropriate code where necessary to include a thumbnail link to a photo or gallery.
Thanks
Mike

Mike,
You can do what you describe by using "snippets", which is part of EE 1.5. You use //yourwebsite/gallery/snippets.php as a php include in the page, and then you can set what is displayed from a couple of different settings.
/gallery/snippets.php?get=latest_galleries shows the most recent galleries posted as text (titles)
/gallery/snippets.php?get=latest_photos&exhibition=all&viewas=text shows the titles of the latest photos posted.
/gallery/snippets.php?get=random_photos&amount=6&exhibition=all&border=1&hspace=10&vspace=1&bordercolor=0000FF&viewas=image
Six random photos from all galleries with a 1 pixel border...
You can see a variety of different outputs from snippets on my website, here (http://www.ruaux.net/gallery/snippetdemo.php). I use snippets to get a selection of random thumnails and exhibition names on my personal site (http://www.ruaux.net/)
Hope this is helpful to you.

Very, thanks for the info :-)
Just out of interest, are snippets mentioned in some documentation that I've missed reading up on?

I actually found out about snippets from this forum. Searching on the forum should find some more threads where it is discussed.

also, make sure you note the two methods of invoking the snippets... this is a common situation for PHP scripts... to be a bit more exact, check the threads that i participated in WRT snippets ;)
when you do the search, you'll likely want to use the advanced search so that you can limit the search to the EE forum... i don't know what other forums snippets have been discussed in but my initial "plain jane" search turned up stuff in other forums that i was not aware of...
