The first day of my final visit to the Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting. Here's a couple of snaps of some of the more interesting cars...

#1 The MG Lola out as part of the Lola celebration

#2 "Madge" was having fun in the U2TC class, here seen bouncing over the kerbs whilst being pursued by a little Abarth FIAT. Not a very ladylike display!

#3 The classic "wider" shot at Knickerbrook showing the Derek Bell Trophy field streaming down from Hill Top. The lead car is Michael Lyons in his father's beautiful Lola T400 Formula 5000.

#4 When we eventually had a Derek Bell Trophy race (on Monday) it was won by this lovely Surtees TS20 Formula 1 car.

#5 Talking of interesting cars, the number 41 car in this photo at Knickerbrook is the totally unique McLaren M25 Formula 5000 belonging to Abba Kogan. This was the only one made.

#6 I LIKE Lister Jaguars!

http://www.photozo.com/album/data/8980/RPUK1990x1000.jpg

#7 Ed Cottam's Arnolt Bristol was completely outclassed by the rest of the field but that didn't stop him trying hard or having fun!

#8 and we'll round of with a Chevron B17 1 litre Formula 3 "screamer" running in the second Formula Junior race. Mind your ears!

Thanks for looking, plenty more here http://www.racepicsuk.com/c1568706.html.

For those that like to know such things, the cameras were an EOS 1D Mark III coupled with a Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM and an EOS 1D Mark II couple with a Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX HSM - you can probably work out which was which.

Fantastic set, especially the Lola.
Are you going to the Lola parade around Huntingdon for their anniversary?

Where's this Big Healey then Glenn?

Cracking set. The two wider shots at Knickerbrook are spectacular - the track and train of cars gives a strong lead in line, but more than anything else they really do tell the story of part of the race.

Having said that, the other shots aren't exactly shabby either!

Simon.

Patience, Bag Snapper. It was out to play on Monday! If everyone's really unlucky I'll do a post from then too.

Great stuff Glenn. After using Graham's 500L, I now know why you kep you left hand at the front of the lens. :D

Nice work.

All fantastic shots Glenn, really hard to pick out a favourite but because of the lens flare on the first one and 'Madge' kerb hopping they would be near the top of the list.

Cheers
Ian

Quality shots my good man.

I'm particularly taken with the wider Knickerbrook shots. I've never thought of trying that but most certainly will in the future.

Great stuff Glenn.

The Lola looks great and Madge hasn't failed to disappoint either. #7 is the sort of shot that reminds me why I enjoy watching the Historic stuff!

Must go and sort some of mine out now.

#7 is stunning, you really get a sense of the driver struggling with the wheel, the suspension lifting on the inside really makes this shot for me. What a beautiful little car.

Thanks to everyone for the comments.

Yup, helps to keep it pointing in the right direction. I use the lens "AF Stop" buttons mounted on the front of the lens to control autofocus. I find it gives me a better balance.

All fantastic shots Glenn, really hard to pick out a favourite but because of the lens flare on the first one and 'Madge' kerb hopping they would be near the top of the list.

Thanks Ian, the flare did work out well and "Madge" was good value.

That's a Ken Grey angle. I use it under license. (See Ken, I do listen sometimes)

Seeing rare cars like this being raced to the limits of their ability is what classic racing in Britain is all about. I think it is fantastic that their owners are still prepared to use them for their proper purpose, regardless of the risks. Make no mistake, the cars are being pushed hard and the chances of them being damaged or the drivers being serious injured are very real, and much higher than in modern designs. I admire them all.

Sorry I didn't see much of you at the weekend Glenn but snapping away for MSV and having to feed their website every couple of hours kept me pretty much tied down.

I am a big fan of the open shot for motorsport and try to encourage people to stop trying to fill the frame with one car. Looking at my nearly 30 years of being published I reckon that 80% of those in print are open shots, so maybe there's a lesson to be learned there somewhere.

Not impressed with the Gold Cup this time around comparing it with even recent times such as 2003 with a lot of the TGP tin and 2004 for the 50th anniversary. Racing was pretty decent however and the battle at the front of the FJ race, right down to the wire, was impressive.

Feel free to use my Knickerbrook angle any time. Oh, must fly a flag for single seaters, for me they rule every time.

I much prefer vintage racing over the new cars. Great series. Love #1. Took me awhile to go through those on your site.
