I was recently asked to photograph hats for what I think is going to be a catalogue for a friend of mine because he mentioned selling some hats. My question is this:

1. What's the best method in capturing these images to give him a good catalogue look. I looked around the net and liked the approach most department stores had (all white, with hat as subject showing great demension). I dont have a studio, so I might have to get creative with this one. Your help is greatly appreciated.

2. I have not done work like this before, so I am unfamiliar with rates and how they should be charged. By shot? By day? By Hour? By selection?

Thank you for all the help. I'll post the images if/when I close the deal. Thanks.

well if no one else is going to bite:

Your best bet is to search here for soft box threads to get an idea of how to light the shot. I think people typically charge by the product for things like this, and once you get everything set you should be able to run the subsequent items through quickly.
