Sorry if this has been discussed.
I mostly photograph outdoors in daylight.
I have an intrest in photographing High School basketball.
What results would I get if I use the Canon 70-200 f4 with Metz 44 AF-4C flash?
Any suggestions appreciated.
Danny

I'm interested in the replys as well. I just got a 20D with a 22-55mm kit lens. My kids play soccer, football, and basketball, and I would love to get some of the same results I see posted on here. I figured when I got the camera I would probably want the 70-200mm lens for night games and indoor, and that seems to be confirmed in most of the threads I've read here. I shot some soccer last week outdoors in pretty good light with the old telezoom I had with my Canon Film Rebel, and it was OK----but I can't get those f4 lenses to function at a basketball game with any combination of exposure/shutter/ISO, etc. I am a complete newbie, as I have been a "full auto point and shoot" guy for the last 10 years, but the info on this site is great.
I intend to order the Sigma 70-200MM in the next day or so. Seems to get good reviews here if you don't want to spend the extra dough for the Canon lens. I get the feeling if you aren't a pro, but still want very good result without a flash---this lens is a good choice. But I will be checking here for remarks from the people that know.

The 70-200mm f/4L will work very well with flash always assuming that you are *allowed* to use flash in the arena in question.
Many sporting events/venus get upset about photographers blinding the competitors with flash guns. Check if it is acceptable before trying, otherwise you could find yourself being forcibly ejected from the premises.

Thanks Hydro, I am looking at the Sigma 70-200 2.8 also.
Cadwell, I have just started shooting High School B-Ball. Most all the Gyms so far have allowed flash photography. As I stated above to Hydro, I am also looking at the Sigma 70-200 2.8 lens. I really like the "non" flash look of action photos. What is your take on this lens.
I should have stated also that I am using a 10D.
I shot some basketball action yesterday with my Canon 50mm 1.8 without flash. They came out "ok", but would like to improve them if I could.
I am considering the Canon 85mm 1.8 in the pile also, maybe as my dedicated basketball lens.
Thanks alot for the information.

I'd like to help you out, Danny, but I don't have the Sigma 70-200mm lens and I make it a point not to comment on lenses I don't own. There are plenty of people on here who do own one though. Perhaps you'ld have better luck if you posted this question over in the Canon EOS forum. This forum is really used for sharing photos :)

I don't know anything about the sigma. However, your topic says 70-200 f4 (Canon I believe). I use mine with flash in portrait work, and I love the results.
