iPod to store photos

Looking at getting a 40 GB iPod Photo. Just wondering if anyone here transfers their photos off their camera to their iPod, if so how does it work? I recall a post a few months back about this, but can't seem to find it. Thanks!

There are much cheaper and easier ways to go.

there is no way to get photos off the camera directly on the ipod photo. you have to transfer them to your pc first and then via firewire/usb 2.0 to the ipod photo using itunes.

it is important to point out that unless you specifically state that you want to store the full photo on the ipod, it will only store a vga res thumbnail. if you store the whole photo, it will store both the thumbnail and the photo.


i strongly suggest looking at the epson p2000 - it has built in cf and sd slots, displays raw, and has a huge and absolutely gorgeous lcd.

i have both units - the ipod i use for casually showing people photos and for listening to mp3s. the p2000 is used for location shoots, travel, backup, and for displaying divx movies on the plane when i travel. if you have any specific questions about either, feel free to pm me

I don't know about the iphoto, but the regular ipods CAN have image files transfered to them without the use of a computer, AND it will be the whole image, and not just a preview. I do it all the time. You need the Media Card Reader accessory for the ipod. You just plug the reader into the ipod, and take your CF card from the camera, and plug it into the reader. Then click import, and it copies the contents of the Card onto your ipod for storage. I've done this many times during shoots, as i only have a coupld 256mb cards, so when i fill them up, i transfer the images to my ipod, while using another card for shooting as it's transfering. Works pretty well, only downside is that it's pretty slow, and laggy, but it gets the job done.

The main problem with the IPhoto is lack of direct card reader. You can use 3rd party readers with it, but it is very, very slow.

The Epson P-2000 gets excellent reviews and allows direct use of the card in a built in slot with good transfer rates.

I have just ordered one, hoping it gets here Monday or Tuesday.

this is fine on 3g ipods, but it doesn't work on the 4th gen. belkin has been promising an update - but the reality is it takes like 20 minutes to offload 256megs, so why bother... they also have the camera link which is sorta faster, but again, this is not supported on 4g

The Belkin reader is a horsey solution -- it's bigger than an iPod, plus you're carrying two devices. So, even though I work here at Apple, I decided on the Archos Gmini 220 for offloading pics in the field. It will copy but not display RAW. It has a built-in CF2 slot. I hate the user interface and the tiny control buttons that sometimes don't work, but heck, it's just copying files. And you still get music.

I read some of the reviews of the Belkin iPod card reader... they all seemed pretty negative. I have a 40 Gb iPod, so was initially very hopefull.... I have a big holiday coming up, for which easy hard-disk transfer would be ideal. However, £60-70 on a beklin product that (allegedly) ate batteries and performed very slowly with the iPod didn't seem ideal. I searched around and splashed out £105 on a Vosonic 40Gb X drive 2.

Doesn't look as trendy as the iPod, but you don't need a belkin interface... and it just does *exactly* what it says on the tin :)

Guess I should have been more specific in what I was looking for. We all know the iPod is great as a MP3 player. That is one reason I want to get it. The second reason is to offload any pics I take to the iPod so I can free up CF space. I read a review on epionions.com and the person reviewing the product says he does this. I am somewhat interested in the storing pictures on the iPod, but the color display looks awesome. I guess what I really want is a MP3 player and a device that stores files, but is easy to transfer photos from my 300d to the iPod, an additional cable isn't a big deal. I know this isn't a MP3 player site, just was wondering if anyone has done this. I heard of issues with 4th gen iPods, thanks for the heads up.

The Belkin appears to be the only solution for transfering photos to an iPod. If there's another I've not heard about it, nor found it on any web searches.
