Hi all was wondering if this is a shutter or mirrior problem, to me its a shutter problem but dosent happen all the time but it was very cold outside, any and all help will be appericated. its a canon 10 d

Looks like the shutter never fully opened.

Would a mirror problem effect both the top and bottom of the picture? My guess is a shutter problem.

I could be wrong, but to me it looks like the mirror isn't getting out of the way. Are the shutters not horizontal? I'll have to look it up.

Olegis posted a link to someone who took apart their 10D to mod it for Astro Photography; and I remembered seeing this:

So the answer would be yes; the shutter blades are opening vertically.
