Great shots both of you...
I'm convinced... This weekend I took some bird-shots with the 20D and the 75-300 (must be version 1, bought it in 1997) and my wife was convinced that the image quality was good (we had nothing to compare...) and I explained that at that time (EOS500) I hadn't the cash to buy another thing that a 250 Euro Lens. She then 'convinced' me to look around and try to find another one... Of course, I head the answer ready : 100-400 L IS USM . When I said the price (about 1500 Euro) she said : Ok, you've got a good camera, you need a good lens too... So in the next six months, I guess I'll have one... Oh I love my wife...

Are you finding it easy to adjust to?Hi, I was a little worried about the push-pull zoom mechanism as I had mainly used lens with twist actions before. I need not have worried as I found it *much* easier, the only drawback for me is the fact that I have to lock the zoom when I am just carrying the camera/lens so that it doesnt extend, and then have to unlock it when I want to take a shot.

The 75-300 images are not near as bad as people think. I am also in the process of going back to my 2003 10D and 75-300 images and reprocessing them with DXo. If you like the posted image you should see the DXo processed one. As I have time I plan to replace all the gallery images with DXo processed images. Big job.

Paul you can't rain on my Parade, I will be the first to admit the Sigma 50 to 500 is an awsome lens, I own 2 sigmas. The reason I have the 100-400 is because of the IS for hand holding, it gives me an edge in certain situations.
My friend has a Sigma 800mm lens and his pics are awsome.
I will give you a hint. If you want tack sharp pics get your self a bogen 3421 Gimbel head, it works wonders for flying birds.

Well I can't do with out a long lens now, like I not going to give him back his lens until I get my own. Seeing Scottes and CDS's stuff and Boomer's moon have, well, you see, forced me to place an order with B&H today. So get ready for me in the club. AND get ready for the flood of pictures I'm sure to take. Might even be one or two of a little bird. I can't wait . . . dang, should have shipped it overnight. My wife hates you guys btw . . .

The 75-300 behaves very well for the price. The included shot (no noise removal, no usm, nothing except cropping) is a 100% crop of a bird of prey (don't know his name, but it's rather frequent here) about 300-400 meters away (20D, 1/4000s, 300mm, f/5.6, iso800 (I know... I could have made it iso200 at 1/1000s or a smaller aperture)) I think it's pretty good, but I think the extra 100mm (to 400) of the 100-400 and the possibility to add a 1.4x or 2x just makes me want it. Normally the 75-300 has more purple fringing at 300 mm, here it doesn't, probably because of the colors, but other subjects have them.
I guess that the 100-400 doesn't have fringing? anyone to confirm this?
Hmmm I think I'll check this DXo you're speaking of.

Yes, it will have fringing at times. You just have to stay away from the causes, or fix it in Photoshop.
I'd think that any zoom will have fringing in the right circumstances, and most (all?) primes, too.
Just don't shoot high-contrast subjects with a bright background wide open and you'll reduce this substantially. But I'll take a fringed shot over a missed shot.

So the smaller the aperture, the less fringing.
Less contrast means also less fringing.
My picture in this thread of the bird of prey doesn't show fringing. Is that because of colors don't contrast too much? light-brown on blue sky?

Have a really close look and see if you see the thin red line running around the blue underbelly and the writing at the front like America West. Compare these photos in the links :-).
Oh incidentally I notice a couple of the engines of America West have a red line around them (could there be "L" engines? :-) :-) ).

Could it be Air Force II :-) Air Force -2 (...engines that is :-))
And I'll agree that the 75-300 is terrible for purple fringing - Drives me nuts..especially on reflective surfaces shining in the sun...the 100-400 has got to be a vast improvement over it :-)

Ikinna: I do not get fringing with the 20D or the 100-400 L But F 5.6 should not give it to you. One thing you have to remember is if a bird is the size of a pen cap on a 3 x 5 pice of paper not matter what you do you cannot record detail, it is to far away, so you go for reach. I own the 100-400 L and you can put an extender on it but you loose auto focus and get soft images. I have gotten some good shot set at 350mm but at 400 mm no way.
Boomer: Great shot it is a great set up.
Cyber Dan: Hey as always your shot are great but I love the pair, not only are the birs beautiful but so is your photography, awsome.
Scotts: wow I can't say enought about yours, great shot.

My picture in this thread of the bird of prey doesn't show fringing. Is that because of colors don't contrast too much? light-brown on blue sky?
Contrast is definitely the leading causing of fringing. Stepping down helps a bit, but not always. Check out this tutorial on Correcting CA: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=48830 - just look at the pics. That was the 17-40 stepped down to at least f/16 if not f/22. Because of the contrast it still shows fringing. And the lack of contrast is why your pic doesn't show fringing.
And stepping down too much can cause diffraction which is also not good.
But don't get paranoid about which aperture to use. You have to take the shot the best you can. Fringing can be corrected in PS, diffraction is harder to fix. But if the optimum aperture setting for the lens won't make the pic - such as lack of DoF or too much DoF or too slow of a shutter - well... Take the pic as best you can. Just try to stay away from such high-contrast shots.

While the other shots are indeed Eagles in the wilds of Migration on the Mississippi, that particualar headshot is of one who can not be returned to the wild due to a gunshot wound. he is 80% blind, and is now part of a Refuse. That was at one of the numerous 'Eagle Days' celebrations found up and down the Mississippi this time of year.
