its not like it needs a bigger battery to turn the motor faster, is it? :D

Does it have an extra processing chip in it, or is it just marketing, artificially crippling the camera until you buy an expensive grip to unlock something the camera probably can do anyway?

I would assume it would be able to draw power faster from the batteries and that's why you can gain the extra 3 fps. (lets you use EN EL4/ 8AAA batteries)

Because you gave Nikon more money they enabled more features.

It's a way to get your money, there are threads around showing how to get the faster fps by using a pre programed burst shooting mode tied to one of its buttons, tho the REASON is because the grip allows more power to be sucked, this trick only works with 10 frames in a row and then it stops.
