View Full Version : White lenses in Yankee Stadium?

Does anyone know if I can bring and use long white lenses at Yankee Stadium?

One of the banks we broker for is taking us to New York City for the weekend. There also taking us to see a Yankee/Orioles game. I don't really follow baseball at all but it may be fun to photograph.

The Stadium website says:
"Single-frame flash photography is allowed. But I don't know If I will get hassled using the 70-200.

Also there site says: "no backpacks" Does anyone know if I can bring a small photo backpack? Like my Lowepro Micro trekker?

Thanks!

CAMERAS & VIDEO EQUIPMENT
Single-frame flash photography is allowed. All forms of video and motion-picture cameras are strictly prohibited. Guests are also forbidden to use lighting or camera support pods at the Stadium. Please note: Fans are not permitted to reproduce or rebroadcast any film of Yankees games for commercial purposes without the prior written permission of the Yankees and Major League Baseball.

This is what I found also. So take it and see.

Check with member MDJAK....I believe he has taken white lenses to several Yankee games.

You can...my friend brought his 100-400L with him with no problem

quite true. I've never had a problem bringing in the 70-200 or 100-400. I've been tempted to bring in my 300, but haven't tried it. Often I will leave the lens off the camera and keep it in my pocket or hand, though it's not really necessary. Take a wide angle also, perhaps a fisheye, and climb up to the very top. You'll get a great shot that way.

Oh, I'd leave the camera bag home or in the trunk of your car. That they probably will not allow depending on its size.

This was taken with the 70-300 on my D3, so no crop factor. I was sitting very close to the field here, between home and the beginning of the visitor's dugout.

I brought my 100-400 and 70-200 2.8 into yankee stadium this year.. no problems
remember; NO BAGS! You have to carry whatever you want in a plastic grocery bag or nothing.

You CAN check a bag across the street at the bowling alley; so you can go out all day then end up at the stadium.

Many thanks for the replies.
I wish I could, but I don't think I can do the longer lens. Too much lugging around in the city, plus were going out after and don't want to carry around a bunch of camera equipment. I will just stick with the 40D+17-55.

Yea, it seems hit or miss. (no pun intended) some people can get in with no problems and some get turned away. Its almost like its up to whoever is working the door. Oh well I'll take wide shots instead!

So definitely DO NOT bring a bag?

I'm going next week after work so I'll be taking the subway there.
I guess I can plastic bag the camera...but man, that's tough.

Do you think they will give me any issues if I bring the white lens in the soft case it came with? That's pretty low-profile no?

Or better not to risk it? Perhaps wrap a towel around it?

Correct; they will not allow any type of a backpack.

That is exatly what jpthomas27 (jason) did when he and I went this year for Padres vs Yankees.

Just backpacks?
I am under the impression that ANY bags except for woman's purses won't be allowed.

Great on the padded lens case. That would work out fine. I just don't want to be carrying the white lens all exposed. I guess I will bring some plastic shopping bags for cover since I will be taking the subway there.

Thanks!

Not looking for great shots. Just want to snap a few for the memories!

Do you think I will have problems with a small Tamrac camera bag? just big enough to cover the 40D+17-55?

I thought I had posted this in this thread, alas it was in one of the others I clicked off the link from here. So I'll try it here, as it fits here more.

Glad I found this thread before I posted a new one. I'm going to the Stadium on Wednesday (my first/last trip) and my friend told me the tickets are box seats behind the Yankee dugout, so I want to bring my 70-200 and 17-40 with me.

So by reading this thread, I'm under the belief that:
- No camera bag
- Carry the camera and lenses with me
- Hope for the best somebody doesn't shoot me down.

I have a little Adorama sidepouch camera bag -- that isn't allowed at all?

Also, I have the grip on a Canon 30D -- will that pose any problems?

I want to carry both lenses as I want some shots of just the stadium and then the 70-200 for some action shots. I'll just have to figure out how to pull it off. Guess I could wear some cargo shorts and keep one in the big pocket.

Are my assumptions based on this thread correct? Thanks!

I just called the stadium and asked if I could bring any type bag at all and was told NO BAGS!. just a bare camera and lens. Then promptly was hung up on.

I am going as well and have been trying to get information from those who already went. I have the exact same concerns. I am taking the subway there after work and am taking my 1DMKIII, 300 F4 IS, 16-35L, 24L, and 1.4x TC with me. I have come to the conclusion that I will need to "shopping bag" everything and forgo the camera bag.

Here is my understanding:

Bags: Bring at your own risk. There are places you can check your bags in, like across the street. But that's just another extra step you will need to account for. Plastic shopping bags have been suggested as an alternative. There have been reports of folks getting in with a camera bag, however the majority opinion is that NO BAGS! (unless you are driving and can leave your bag in your car should you get rejected)
Lens pouch/case. I will bring my 300L f4 IS in the soft padded case it came with slung around my shoulder. All indications are that this will be acceptable. I will also have a smaller lens pouch (LowePro 1 or 1W) with a 16-35L inside attached to my belt. I may also have another small fast prime (most likely my 24L) in another pouch or just mounted on the MKIII and have my wife carry the 1.4x TC or just pocket it.
Lenses: I have read folks getting in with the 70-200 f4/f2.8, 100-400, 300L f4 IS, even a 300L f2.8 IS! Seems like it depends on the person checking you. Also sounds like it depends on where your seat is. Second tier and upper deck aren't much of an issue...field boxes are "iffy"...
Security Check: The general suggestion is to pick someone older (not someone who looks like and acts like a supervisor or someone new) and be honest and friendly when questioned. It has also been suggested to wear some kind of a jacket and hide your lenses in the jacket. More than likely they won't check your jacket. The only problem is it is still September so the Jacket might be a little too much, no? Fortunately, in the evenings it usually falls in the 60's this time of year, so at least it won't look unusual at night. They are looking for bags with concealed weapons and other illegal items. The bottom line is they don't want to spend the time or the money checking each individual bag so the easiest way to deal with that is to just not allow bags at all.So this is how I am going to do it:
Wear a seasonal jacket (for 60 degree weather) with plenty of "give" so I can hide my gear. Carry the 300L inside the lens pouch, sling it over my shoulder and UNDER my jacket. 16-35L inside the small lens case attached to my belt. MKIII + 24L inside a shopping bag, then once I get to the stadium, slung around my neck. 1.4x TC in my pants pocket or my wife's purse.

Simple, isn't it?;)

Gotta love Yankee Stadium and its stupid policies!

Well, I've decided to just put the 70-200 in my cargo pants, or the 17-40, pending which I have on the camera at the time and I'll just carry it in. I'd prefer my camera bag so I could put it away in the later innings, but it's all good. I'll just carry the thing around as needed I guess.

I could always abandon bringing the camera all together, but I would like some shots, so I'll deal with how Yankee Stadium and the "policies" are handled.

I understand the concern and all of that, but is Yankee Stadium about the only baseball stadium in MLB that doesn't allow bags? I've never had a problem with bags anywhere else I've been.

From what I gather, they are pretty tight arsed about the bag part. It makes you wonder if it's for security purpose or just plainly that they don't want to bother checking them. I guess I can sort of understand...all those people entering the stadium on a daily basis...would be painful to check each and every bag.

The thing that gets me is that I keep on reading that some people would get in no problem with their bags, while others are treated rudely.

No surprises there...

I brought a no so heavy jacket with me. I'll carry my 300L in the lens pouch hidden under the jacket.

Hey good luck to you. (And me!)

OK, here's an update for what happened to me (of course, only four games at home left now).

I was parked in the garage, so we went walking around for a little while without the camera. Checking the shops and the area. Then as we went back, we stopped and asked a guy at the entrance -- and he said the size I described would be OK, as long as it's not a video camera etc.

So I grabbed my gear, got our tickets and went to the same guy. He let me through, sent me to the blue polo guy, who asked me to open it, he tagged it and said "enjoy the game."

No problems whatsoever. I have one of those Adorama slinger bags and went in with my 30d with grip, 17-40 and 70-200. I saw many people get turned away with their backpacks and larger bags, however.

Went a few days ago with my 1DMKIII, 300L f4 IS, 16-35L, 24L. I had a jacket on and the 300L in its lens pouch under my jacket, the 24L inside a LowePro lens case 1 attached to my belt, the 16-35L mounted on my MKIII slung over my shoulder.

I had no problems getting in.

This is for Yankee Stadium? who cares what the sign says, the last game is approaching anyway. Take whatever you want to take pictures with. :)

If you drive there that's one thing, but if you are not, and you take a big white lens and can't get in, you are screwed. Not a very smart decision.

Reading what others have done to get it is extremely helpful I would say.

And just b/c the gear is hidden, doesn't mean they won't check you. They actually did check. I told the checkers these were lenses. They let me in.
