I am surprized that there is no L series 50mm prime from Canon.
I am used to the quality of Leica 50mm M series. What is same quality or close from Canon to use on new 20D dSLR?
How good is the 17-40L lens or 24-70L lens?

Until a couple of years ago Canon had a 50/f1.0L. You can still find them used occasionally.
The 50/1.4 is generally considered "L" quality by most people I know.

Probably the closest remaining equivilant is 35/1.4L or 85/1.2L depending on which way you are going.

The 50/1.4 is actually a lot sharper than the massive 50/1.0 L (don't have the lens, but read it several times).

I'm surprised Canon doesn't paint a red ring around the 50mm f/1.4 and call it an L :)

We are somewhat lucky with the 1.6 crop cameras..

Canon makes a 35mm f/1.4L which will give approximately the same field of view on a 20D as a 50mm lens would on a full 35mm frame body..

I was going to add the 35mm f/1.4 to my lens kit, but I recently bought a house in the country and I've had to waste money on things like a garden tractor and, snow thrower and stuff like that.. There's a pile of landscaping to do in the spring.. It really cut in to the toy budget :(

They'd have to improve the build quality before they did that. The f/1.4 is a lot better than the f/1.8 but it's nowhere near as well built as an L series lens.

Thanks, I did not realize that the 35mm f/1.4 is the same field of view on a 20D:D I will look into prices on this lens.
