Have this old faded picture of me when I was a baby and my older brother.
Used PSP8 to do as much correcting as I could, and I think it's a drastic
improvement, execpt one main problem, the reds are too burgandy, my
dress and his sweater were really red. Anyone care to take a stab at it
or tell me what to try? I have worked on this a few months ago for hours.

Nice work - you're almost there.

-Make a selection of the burgundy tones using Selection>Color range. Try a "fuzziness" setting of about 50; use the "add to sample" eye dropper and click on all the burgundy colors.
-Copy the selection to a new layer (Cntrl-J) so that you can adjust its color.
-Use Hue/Saturation adjustments on this new layer, moving the hue slider to the right, increasing saturation as needed, and tweaking the brightness.

Make sure you do the color adjustments only on the new layer - either directly on the layer -- or better -- using an adjustment layer linked to the new layer created from the selection.

Pardon me for dropping in without any helping comments. I myself just get started in learning PS CS. But looking at the before and after pictures, only one word came to mind -- magical!

OK -- here's the result using methods along the lines I suggested in my first post. I used the layer mask on the H/S adjustment layer to remove or tone down the color adjustment to some areas. I also warmed the image slightly to get some color into the skin tones.

wow! that looks great. I will try what you suggested, but I am not very experienced using layers so will take my a while to figure it out. Thanks for the tips!

Actually you want to create a clipping mask (not link the layers which I erroneously said before). You will have three layers from top to bottom:

3. Hue/saturation adjustment layer
2. New layer created from selection of layer 1.
1. Original image

and you want to create the clipping mask for getting layers two and three to work together without the adjustment layer also affecting layer 1.

Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS), position the pointer over the line dividing two layers in the Layers palette (the pointer changes to two overlapping circles Overlapping circles), and click. - from http://pdesigner.net/photoshopcs/1_14_13_0.html

Image broke apart from so much processing (jpegging), but this technique would work with more information in the image. I selected highlight, midtone, and shadow from the curves dialog box. The I channel swapped until I had the weight correct. Desaturated the hair some, flooded the whites with 5-3-2-0 color, and tried to deblue the lips, but there wasn't any infor there. I think I color corrected the booties, too. the colors still look old, but that's kind of authentic. Final step was to select the burgandies, pick a color and flood with Color Only, paint it in from history.
