do you carry your camera, when going on an airplane? Do you carry it with you or pack it with the suitcase? Also, would it get damaged by the X-ray machine?

No. Cameras and digital media will not be damaged by x-ray machines.

You might want to check with the airline/airport about cabin baggage limitations. You may find that your cabin luggage might not have enough capacity for your camera gear and you'll have to check it in the hold baggage (which isn't a bad thing if it's securely packed).

The thing is, most of the stuff, except for the camera and the lenses are coming in a separate bag, i.e. camera bag, the tripods are going in the suitcase

That's pretty much what I do. I fly almost every week and rarely check any baggage. But I also rarely take a tripod along which sucks sometimes.

When I travel, I always put my tripod in my checked baggage. I have no idea if they (TSA) will let you take it on the airplane. As an FYI, my checked baggage has always been opened and searched with the tripod in it. I take everything else in my camera bag as carry on. I've never had a problem going through security and as long as it fits in the overhead bin, your set.

My cameras are often on my shoulders, when not they are packed in carry-on bags only.

Cameras ONLY go under the plane when flying with 4 or more bodies and remotes. Then my gear is packed in Pelican cases.

While the TSA and other certain airport security administrations do allow tripods to fly as carry on, they are generally checked depending on the trip. Whether I check my tripod or not directly depends upon the size of the tripod, how much I am hauling with me, if there is other checked baggage and how much time I have on the ground. If you are checking bags though, check the tripod. Tripods are not what airport thieves are looking for, they are looking for the cameras and lenses.
