Quick question for the owners of the 20D with the 24-70L who use the built in flash: Does the lens cast a shadow in the image when using the built in flash? If so, at what focal length does it occur?

Thanks in advance.

Are you getting a semi-circular shadow at the bottom of your pictures? Longer lenses can do that when you use the built in flash. The solution is to buy an external flash.

Tim-

I'm not getting any shadow in my images since I don't even own the gear yet.

Reason for asking is to prioritize my gear buy list.

20D
24-70L
Grip
Tripod
External flash
50 f1.4
...

I picked the 24-70L as the "one lens that will do it all for now that I won't ever have to get rid of as long as Canon makes EF mounts". Essentially, the 24-70 will replace the range I've grown accustomed to from the S45.

If the built in flash can't see around the lens, then I may have to prioritize the external flash before others.

I don't have the 24-70, but my 17-40 does shine a shadow at the bottom of my pictures when used with the built-in flash at around 17-20mm. Seeing that the 24-70 has same diameter (77mm) but a bit longer than the 17-40 you might get a slight shadow. This is my educated guess.

I don't have that lens so I can't help sorry. I do have a couple of thoughts:
- The built in flash is pretty crap, I never use it. Since getting the external flash I use it a lot. The 420EX should be sufficient unless you really know what you're doing, and you can always keep it and use it as a slave if you upgrade to a 550/580EX later.
- The Tamron 28-75 is a great lens and meant to be very close to the 24-70L at about 1/3 the price.

Yes - pretty much across the board. The hood sticks out a lot! I did a couple just for the heck of it, then went back to the 580EX.

Yes, you will get a circle shadow in the bottom middle, even without using the hood. Your options increase the ISO or purchase another flash. I certainly would not let the popup stop you from purchasing such a fine piece of glass.
