well i shot my first hockey game on the weekend and it went fairly well. i had far from ideal lense selection (just my new best friend, my 85mm) but made due with what i had. the lighting was fabolous so i was able to fire at 400iso 1/640shutter and f/1.8-f/3ish i did turn it up to 800 for a stints. EXIF is still hangin around on all the shots i think...

1 - jesse boucher of the western mustangs seen here two fisting some timmy hoe hoes during his pre game routine

2 - jesse boucher lettin it fly from just inside the blue line in the first period
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/3oh6/IMG_0861.jpg

3 - shawn thompson (originally from 306 area code) mixes it up in the corner with a thunderwolf forward
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/3oh6/IMG_0910.jpg

4 - hook...what hook? the game was fairly clean of stickwork and the bodies were primarily used as the enforcers on the ice this night
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/3oh6/IMG_0915.jpg

5 - lakehead netminder grant mccune had a solid night stopping 43 or 47 shots including this one in the second period
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/3oh6/IMG_0962.jpg

6 - uwo right winger jamie chamberlain doing everything he can to try and get the mustangs within a couple early in the third period
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/3oh6/IMG_0994.jpg

7 - first year forward chris clayton clutching his left arm after a big collision in the corner late in the game...he would be fine

rest of the nights shots can been viewed here (http://3oh6.com/uwo/hockey/jan%2029%20lakehead%20vs%20uwo/)

Great captures with good framing/crops, exposure and excellent color. Some shots look like you're right on the ice. I assume these were all shot through the glass (or whatever they call it).

The 1/640 shutter speed looks just about perfect - although I'd be curious to see what you gain by increasing it - especially for slapshots and goalie saves. I like the stick/puck blur in your pics - but you have room to freeze the action more if you want to.

Canada's not a bad place to live if you own a camera and like hockey. :)

I assume these were all shot through the glass (or whatever they call it).i had an excellent spot to shoot from, ice level in a big wheel chair accessible box just inside the blue line...mint. and yes it was shot through glass, you can see the glare in #3 but the rest of the shots i got were pretty much free and clear of any manipulation from the glass.

I like the stick/puck blur in your pics - but you have room to freeze the action more if you want to.this is very true, i can bump the iso up to 800 and probably shoot at 1/1000 around 2.4 +/- . i am ichin to get back to the rink to try and see how i can further inmprove these shots. i will definately post when i get some more shots with various shutter speeds.

the 85 is a rockin lens!i really value your opinion Will, i have watched you become one of the finer bball shooters i know and more recently those great track shots so your comments mean alot...thanx. i am definately going to be playing with shutter speed some more next time i get in the rink, i was pretty much overwhelmed just trying to keep up to the game, plus i was shooting for the UWO website and knew they also wanted a journalistic approach so i had to keep my eyes on the crwod and players benches too. hockey is going be one tough sport to get good at i think, but it sure is fun to shoot. once again, i cant thank you enough for turning me onto that gem of an 85mm. it was your comments about it that made me drop the $300 without thinking twice, and it turned out be to fairly decent for hockey except i wont be able to get much more than an 8x10 with any of these shots so a 70-200 would be ideal.

I'm a huge hockey fan, and I love these photos!thanx...i was hoping someone else was going to enjoy that shot as much as i did. i laugh everytime i look at it, if only it wouldn't have happened so deep in the corner and that glare wasn't there...i darn near broke my lense hood slamming up against the glass when i was tracking that action.
