Hi, I am in the market for a first time tripod set up. My gear consists of the following

Xti w/ 70-200F4L or the Tamron 28-75

Very light setup probably 4-5lb.
But looking forward to upgrading the Xti to a 40d so that would definately up more weight.

Tripod legs
055XB

Ballhead is where Im torn apart.
486 RC2
or
488 RC0, RC2, RC4

What are the differences from these ballheads? Im really new to the ballhead market and not really sure what each different plate does. Some help would be greatly appreciated !

The Manfrotto "RC2" quick release system is the one generally considered best suited to the Canon EOS family of bodies and related lenses.

The 486RC2 is an OK ball head, but tends to creep a bit with heavier loads on it as compared to the 488RC2.

The 488RC2, in addition to being significantly sturdier than the 486RC2, has an additional feature that makes it even better for use on a tripod - the separate pan release to allow it to swing horizontally without releasing the main ball.

I use the 488RC2 on my tripods and the 486RC2 on my monopod (a Manfrotto 680B).

My recommendation for a very good general-purpose tripod is the Manfrotto 055XProB with their 488RC2 ball head on it.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I just noticed that there is a 055XDB one upgraded from the 055XB. Listed as improved and lighter weight of the 055XB. Are there any significant differences where either one is more inferior? The price range is 30$ less than the 055XB

I don't know about those versions. I do know that the 055XProB (the successor to my Bogen/Manfrotto 3021BPro) has all the features that I would want, including the ability to use the center column in the horizontal position. I find that capability quite useful at times. I have added the convertible feet (spike/rubber ball end) to mine.

The 488RC is amazingly easy to use and I definitely would recommend it. You spend a little more, but it's so worth it. Go for it!

I far prefer an Arca Compatible quick release system which will allow the use of an L bracket by Really Right Stuff or Kirk Enterprises. You CAN convert the Manfrotto 488 ball head to an Arca Compatible QR system by adding a QR base from Kirk or another manufacturer or you can just purchase a ball head that is already Arca Compatible by RRS, KIRK, Acratech, Arca, Markins or other manufacturers.

You CAN if push comes to shove buy a Manfrotto L-bracket for a RC2 QR system which works O,K, but, is not where near as slick as the RRS L-bracket.

I have the same setup as Skip here and couldn't be more happier, except I have the 681B monopod...
