G'Day all.
Not sure why, but I find this shot interesting. It is part of a queue of ships anchored off the port of newcastle, awaiting entry into the harbour. There were probably 30 or so in total :-). EOS300D + 75-300mm Lens

Second picture is of the "Castle Peak" arriving into Newcastle. This ship is 273 metres long, 43 metres wide, and has a DWT of 141,653 tonnes. Scale is given by the crewman at the bow (in orange suit). These ships don't look as impressive leaving though, because most of the lower red part of the hull is submerged.

Are they carrying coal?

I like #1 too - almost like a nature shot of animals grazing.

Coming from a port, I love #2.

I particularly like the second photo - I think that a slight boost in contrast would make it even better.

Thanks for the comments - I'll play around with the saturation and see what I can do.

The anchored ships are empty, but most likely will be carrying coal outbound. A few carry grain, aluminiuim ingots, and other cargos, but the bulk are coal carriers (including "Castle Peak").

Turn up the contrast and add a little satuation to the second photo and you'll have a framer. That shot is really nice.

I like the second one. It must be quite a feat to get these guys into their "parking spots".

A friend of mine has gone to work for a Rio Tinto company working with their coal extraction business in Newcastle. It's a long way from home!

I like the second shot, the tugs are neat.

Thanks All - I've had a play around in PS and think I got it looking better (I think I psuhed it a little too far last time). I'll post the results in a new thread.

I'd guess so. These tug guys get a lot of practice though :-)

Yeah. It sure is :-). There's quite a few Rio Tinto owned mines around here !

I once got barricaded into one of their sites by environmental activists! :(
