Here is first attempt at B/W with an old wagon wheel I found when out walking around the other day. picture is cropped and resized is all that I did. Please critique and be honest I am big boy I can take it.

I would keep cropping. There's a lot on the bottom you don't need. Also I would clone out the little stick at the very top right corner. Give it a contrast boost as well, it's muddy looking.
Most shots straight out of the digicam need a contrast adjustment right off the top.
In future you should avoid having other things(sticks, etc.) blocking the view of your main subject. Move a bit 'til you have a clear view.
Keep shootin'!

I would try for a larger DOF, just to see how it looks. It could be worse, it could be better... I agree re trying more cropping too.

needs some cropping and color adjustments.....the whites are muddy and grey/brown....try selective color in ps and adjusting neutrals and whites.
If you're shooting and can adjust white balance, keep a white sheet of paper with you to adjust the camera settings for white balance. Keep a grey card to adjust everything else.
