Last game of the Volleyball Invitational

This time round, it was a 5 set game, so I had time to try 2 angles. I from up high from a side bleacher, and then down low by the sideline.

They are cropped quite a little, I think I'm going to go for either the 300 2.8 or the Sigma 120-300 2.8

I think I like the high up angle better, but come the regular season, I think the bleachers will be so far back that my 70-200 will be too short. So I got to look for another location. The down low angle is not that bad, but I can't get much face in the images... I'm scratching my head and my hair is falling off. HELP!!!!!

Saw a cute blonde with a 100-400 on both days, and as I was shooting from up high, as she walked by below, she yelled at me, asking if I got anything good from where I was. Wondered what she got? Maybe I'll ask her the next time I run into her.

As usual, EXIF DATA is intact. Images has been through NN and USM

the shots from up high are nice, but the horizon in the background being at an angle kind of throw you off.

For an ambient light effort, I'd say you did pretty darn well...

Great captures - now I know there's hope for indoor volleyball shots! I definitely am going to check out NN as well.

in the drop down menus, select volleyball.

too bad there's no way to save the images, not sure how long the site will be up.

Great shots there, I did this on another site so might work here too. Aaagogo pick out your three best shots out of the ones you have posted and tell us why? I do this with a lot of my submission work to magazines and it makes it easier (imo) to narrow down shots.

I have the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 and find it excellent in use and versatile with a zoom

Seems like a good way to learn and reflect.

#1
I like this one because of the celebration, besides the players that are on the court who are celebrating after a good play, in the background, the rest of the the team is joining in as well. Brings out the team spirit here.

#2, #8
I choose this and 8, they are essentially the same image, has the peak of the jump, along with facial expression of the offensive player and it seems that the play was made perfectly because the blocker looks to be late in the jump.

#2 the offensive player has already made the kill
#8, I feel that it captures also the essence of a good OH, who has decided to do a tip rather than a spike.

Good stuff and well listed, I would pick 1,2,5 and 7. One because its a great team shot and the reactions in the background make it so special. 2 for the same reasons as yourself, great expression and near peak of jump. 5 for expressions too. 7 I would crop it a bit more to give the top half priority, brilliant shot with the fingers just off the ball.

Well done Aaagogo, makes you think more about the shots doesnt it? would you have changed the shots you posted on reflection?

again nice shots.

so you are focusing by prefocusing first and then when there is action you press * to start focusing?
and do you always stay at 200mm?
any other advice?

i wish i had time to practice, found out my school is playing UCLA tomorrow night and my schools athletics director needs me to help him get some shots.

You have good light there...don't like the crops though honestly, different but found out v-ball that darn net will never be straight unless you're shooting dead on, in which that rules out most gyms. The olympic photos you can see they were shooting direct which is a good angle most can't get to cuz theres no place to shoot from. 3/4/5 woulda tried to focus on the girls on the other side of the net, but then you get the net instead of them sometimes. Darn sport!

the prefocusing was with regards to the the previous thread, when i was shooting behind the courts.

yeah, most of the time at 200mm. i like them tight, but 200 is still too short, all the images have at least a 20% crop

help? dun sell urself short, refer to the business section.

well, just go out and have fun, dun be like me, put too much pressure on yourself, LOL

again nice shots.

yeah, i figured that out too about the net, so i decided to crop the images that way, the top of the the net is in theory, straight, or rather, level with the image horizontal axis.

I tried, but my 30D can only do so much, they didn't turn out half bad for a missed focus point.
