Of course it will, as well as any other EF and EF-S lens.

Well.. after much thinking, very much thinking and debating if i should get this lens or not then i finally walked into the camerastore today which had one used. I went for it, i made the big decision to get this fine lens and now it's sitting here on my floor. This baby is heavy and huge compared to my other lenses. Now i wanna test it for real and so i will on Sunday with a airshow. I hope mine is as sharp as in the examples i've seen posted here.

It's 500g heavier than newer version, but this lens is incredible !!! I have a 20 years old one which is really sharp and fast ! Like a first step in the 300/400/500/600 smooth bokeh lenses

Weight is not a problem for me, i can handle it. Now first impressions of this as i been doing some shooting with it today and tonight. I will try to sum it up with one single word..

WOW!

That's about it hehe, it's pretty bloody impressive to be honest. I've shot with several other lenses, 70-200's and more but this one is really in a whole different category which is not at all comparable to my other lenses. The speed of the AF on such a old lens is very good! the bokeh quality is just lovely and once you nail the focus on your subject is stands out like it was a cut-out-figure on a blurry background. :)

I'll be back with some images tomorrow..

Hehe that's true Roy :) it's hard to be dissapointed by this lens although i have to admit i'm not yet used to shooting with it so i seem to miss focus from time to time. I guess that's just temporary until i get the feel of it.

Here are a few of my first shots with it, there was a small local footballgame played downtown so i grabbed the lens and shot some pics. :)

Has anyone tried this lens with a Canon 1.4x or 2x Mark III TC?

newworld666
5th of September 2011 (Mon), 10:18
 no, I use MKII versions, but I doubt there will be any improvements  ..
Actually, I imagine MKIII versions are more or less concerned with new 300mm, 400mm, 500mm, 600mm and 800mm designs.
I imagine these new lenses are useless with actual bodies , we will have to wait for 30MP or 40MP sensors to get what those news lenses and TC's can offers.

Roy: Thanks! they may be a bit underexposed, i see it now when you mention it. You can congratulate me to the purchase in about a year when i have paid it off completly. I had to split the payment for it to be able to afford it, but i thought it was better to do that then to not buy it at all.

I feel my shooting technique needs some tuning and improvements when i'm using this lens as it's increased size and weight changes the game a bit. It's also the reason why many of my shots now in the beginning are soft and out of focus, because i'm not doing it right.

Here are a few more pics..

No ! .. but it's a heavy duty lens ! so for less than 2000$ there is no competitors. I am using it for 3 years now (a more than 20 years old) and really happy with it

Yes, it's like a gamble .... I had to think a lot before choosing that way. I just know that some people can service such lens, assuming they can find broken parts somewhere.
In my case, I was hesitating with sigma 300L2.8 ... but I trusted more Canon than sigma (even a new sigma).
I believed, if a Canon lens is in order to work, it will be working for a long time, even with manual focus (I don't mind so much manual focusing), but I discovered that you can't do any manual focus with 300L2.8 if AF is broken (it's working a bit like 85L, it needs electrical for manual focusing).

I was not sure that such length would be so important for me (I owned a 70-300DOIS at that time too), so I didn't want to spend to much money in a 300mm ... right now, I would by a 200L2.0 if I could assume the 5000$ for it, so I don't regret the 300L2.8 as a temporary tele.
I am not praying every day for the lens to be working a long time more, but I can feel a bet nervous when focusing seems to be a bit dysfunctional (sometimes just hunting in very low light ).

I still love this lens, it is working so reliable that all I need to do is to take photos with it. It always does its job as I want it to do. For me, it is everything I need from 300mm lens. Well, ok, sometimes I wish there was IS for dark conditions while handholding..
However, I like to use tripod anyway so that is not a problem.

Really sharp Owl.

Indeed this lens is very, very sharp.
It beats my EF 50 1.8 II (which is known to be razor sharp lens).
I took identical shots with both of them at f/2.8 and 300mm really is sharper!

I took many shots and took the sharpest ones. Well, there was not much difference.. but just to avoid misfocusing.

100% crops, left= 300mm f/2.8 right = 50mm f/2.8

Any pointer on, how you calibrate?

There are many ways to calibrate.
Usually, I start calibration using those focus test charts, similar to this:
http://focustestchart.com/chart.html

When its done, then I go out to take some real world photos and if necessary, I do some fine adjustments to match my needs.

Simple as that :)

It's just amazing how well such and old lens still performs. Canon FD 300 2.8L is from 1981 and this EF version is optically indentical.. So EF 300 2.8L is just EF conversion of FD 300 2.8 (as well as FD 500 4.5L and EF 500 4.5L, which is also very good lens!).
Only IS versions has all new optics.

Discontinued and not serviced anymore by Canon !
We have to pray with such lens. but between 1500 to 2000$ there is no competitors available.

Some last week end training, with often a very tight framing near MFD and a 5DMKII beside a 1DMKIII with a 85L ..

A real fun to play with the 300L2.8 .... I dream to buy soon a 200L2.0, but I wonder if I will really go further than this 300L for such type of job  ..

I'm sure it's been asked, but has anyone compared the non-IS AF to the IS versions? Also wondering how the F2.8 non-IS compares to F4 IS AF wise? Looking to swap my F4 IS with a F2.8 version and can afford the F2.8 non-IS pretty soon but keep wondering if I should save more for the F2.8 IS...

Surely, if you can afford for an IS version, you should choose this way.
I didn't want to spend more than 2000$ for an heavy sport 300mm. In my case I want to get a 200L2.0IS .. 300mm is a bit long for sport, when you have an accreditation.

The non IS version is really ultra sharp and pretty fast, with a nice DOF range combined to a smooth and creamy bokeh... but you can't repair it anymore, and it's rather heavy to be used for hours without a monopod.
So if price is an issue, the non IS version is a must have ! better than any F4.0 lenses... if price is not a real issue 300L2.8IS is better .. IS is useful for panning and using it in low light for outdoor portrait.

Thank you newworld666! I keep going back and forth between the non-IS and IS then the 400mm 2.8 non-IS II pops in there too lol The main drawback for me for the non-IS is exactly what you mentioned about repairs. I know there are a few shops that still work on these, but it sounds like parts are REALLY hard to come by nowadays. I plan using the lens quiet a bit and if something were to go out or break Id be screwed. Which sucks even more when you guys are getting amazing shots with it.
