OK, we don't have the great blue... we have purple... Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea)

Yes they are related, a closer relative will be the Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea)

Wow. Gorgeous bird.

Is that lens flare in the first 2 pics? It doesn't look sunny enough for that.
