DJ Battle. The lighting was low and very difficult, but I think I did an alright job with no use of flash. Had to use high ISO 800-1200 and Slow shutter 1/20 - 1/30 speed. I noticed other photographer using Flash like there was no tomorrow. I would think using flash will ruin the natural look and feel only a small venue like this can offer. Do you guys agree? Should I have used a diffused flash? Please let me know what you guys think. I was only able to crop some of the shots due to time. Angles were very limited since I was not allowed on stage. C&C is appricated. T.I.A.

The 50mm f1.4 is a pretty good low light lens... You would have had even more shutter speed at ISO 1600... The 40D handles it well... Most of the Performing Arts photogs often resort to high ISO setting to compensate for low light... Image stabilization is also a good alternative... Thats especially good in combination with the faster lenses.

While I think #2 is pretty good, I'd say some tighter crops of all the other pics would help. The 50mm f1.4 is a sharp lens and when needed, yields pretty good crops.

Personally, I prefer stage action... Spinning records never was my idea of a performance... However, there is a "favorite DJ" thread, somewhere here in the Performing Arts section... And DJ's are posted here occasionally. Over all, this is an interesting set... The blur is somewhat distracting though. Maybe that's why others don't want to say anything... We try to keep it on the positive side... And many are afraid to cross the line.

Thanks for sharing... Keep posting, and comment on other's thread postings too... That will get you more familiar with those who lurk here.

awesome. I don't mind negative constructive comments as long as they help me become better. I used a EF-S 17-55mm IS 2.8 I borrowed from a friend. Next time I will try with the 50mm maybe at 2.0 and higher shutter speed.

#2 is a good shot. I think you were on the right track when you decided not to use a flash. the lighting looks good. and i agree with johnstoy: you can do ISO-1600 on a 40D with good results.

as for the rest of the shots, tighter crops would make all the difference. keep it up!
