Second time shooting football. I was very unhappy with the results but figured I would share anyways. Looking at it is a learning process. UL played horribly so there honestly wasnt much to take pictures of aside from them sucking it up all over the field. This year isnt starting out good..

I really like #6. Did you use the 400mm/f2.8?...and maybe 1D/MIII?

Nice shots.
You have to love your combo [300 f2.8 and 1DmkIII], it is my tool for sports for now.

Adam, These are pretty good. Don't be so hard on yourself. Man, gotta love day football, huh? FWIW, I shoot football almost exclusively vertical. The only time I'll go horizontal is when I'm down field quite a bit and shooting the entire LOS, or shooting wide angle near the end zone.

Thats interesting. Ive only been to two games now and it seems to be pretty 50/50 on what orientation people shoot. I personally like the horizontal because I feel like it leaves more room to relay information and tell a story. I also feel like the action in football moves primarily vertically but thats just me. We all know theres more than one way to skin a cat.
One question I do have is are these pictures dark to you? I havent been home to look at them on my own monitor and I processed them on my fiance's laptop. It had lead me astray in the past but I think these should all be alright. Am I wrong?

Adam, exposure looks good on my monitor, #3 is a little on the dark side but the rest are good. I tend to shoot more landscape for action shots and shoot portrait when I am trying to isolate a player or a player in a play.

Adam,
Don't be so hard on yourself. They are nice shots. The only thing I would leave out is UofL. I'm a UK fan! Just kidding. If that was only your second time shooting the real football, I'd like to see what you produce down the road.

Yes, that was painful to watch! Although your photos are quite pleasing to look at.
I'd say #4 about summarizes that whole game!!!

300 and a MkIII
Adam, I live in Louisville as well. How did you get on the sidelines?, I assume you were. I shot some pics with my 100-400 plus 1.4TC from the stands.
Great pictures. I'd love to be closer to use my 300L and the MK3.

I think look great. Adam, I live in the Louisville area as well. How did you get on the sidelines to shoot? I took some pics at this game with my 100-400 from the stands. I'd love to get field side at a UofL game.

Thanks for the comments guys. Im working really hard to get better. Honestly, and sadly enough, I was limited on this set because I had to shoot in the shade. I left my hat and sunblock at home and my forehead got toasty. After that, I went to the shade for as long as I could. Not a mistake Ill make twice.
Im looking forward to the upcoming game.

Let me put it this way: I've never once had a photo editor ask me to shoot more horizontal images, but I've had three ask me to shoot more verticals (and this was when I was already shooting 80+% vertical). Images look OK on my monitor .

Greats shots as ever Adam!!! pity about the result, ita a shame UofL cant play as good as you take pics!. just two tiny things in #4 theres a yellow dot behind player 3 that i just cant take my eyes off and the other thing is if its called football why isnt anyone kicking the ball??? lol i guess this game is as confusing to me as cricket is to you! keep up the good work!

Haha they kick it every now and then. UL was having to do a lot of kicking (when they werent just flat out fumbling the ball). Ill be taking some "real football" for you soon enough.

Shots look fine Adam, I also shoot about 80-90% vertical and a lot of times from my knees. Also sun block is mandatory for my camera bag.
