I'm shooting an event Feb 19th that is basically a boxing match. The guy that's putting on the event has retained me. Since he "owns" the event, do I still have to get modeling releases to sell photos of the competitors? Thanx

You would if you are selling them for anything commercial. If you are selling them for editorial, then no. You'll also need permission from the event as well to sell commercially.

The best way to work it is to have the event promoter have a registration form for each participant. In the form, the participant agrees to the promoter's photographer and the form is the model release. The promoter gives you copies, and all of that is written into the agreement that you have with the promoter.

Even if you get a release signed by the competitors, you bet your sweet bippy the promoter will want a cut of the action.

Man, its been years since I've seen or heard that phrase. Watch any "Laugh-In" reruns lately? :)
Apologies in advance for the slight detour from the primary subject.

if you are being "retained" which im going to assume means hired for an event... why would you want to bite the hand that feeds you and try to make more money off the competion after the fact, as you may end up not getting another job from the person who "retained" you in the first place
