This topic may have been discussed in previous posts, but here goes. I’m keen to become a strobist and detach my 430EX flash from my 400D. Although the first step in my grand plan to lighting mastery (to become a strobist), has been easy, the next step is now to get the right kit. I have a light stand and umbrella and plan to get the umbrella stand adaptor (to connect the flash and the stand) shortly.
I now need a way to trigger my 430EX but the cost of the Canon ST-E2 is ridiculous, I’m sure there is a cheaper alternative. I don’t mind losing TTL in the process, I shoot in manual most of the time anyways. I also won’t loose sleep if I have to run a synch cable.
Is there a brand/make/thing that I can connect my camera with my flash with, something that one Canonite will with confidence recommend to another Canonite?

AlienBee Cybersyncs are good, and the cheapest decent option.
Skyports (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/505381-REG/Elinchrom_EL_19360_EL_Skyport_Universal_Radio_Slav e.html/BI/2312/KBID/3114) are great, compact, and very reliable.
Pocket Wizard are expensive but 100% reliable.
Ebay/Gadget Infinity radio slaves (google gadget infinity) are cheap and nasty, but will get you started. Then they'll piss you off and you'll upgrade, so you might as well not waste the money.

A PC sync cable, and adapters for the flash and camera, is also a cheap alternative.

Here you go - everything you need in one place. And a good place to do business too.

And I do second Tim's recommendation for the Alien Bees Cybersync radio triggers. I have them, they work great, and the work all the time.
