Why not just make a 10mm or 12mm f2.8 prime? And make it standard EOS mount vs. EF-S? I don't really care about the zoom area between 10-22, it's just 12mm. I'd rather have another stop at 2.8 vs. 3.5.
That being said it's worth every penny of the $649 I paid for it in my opinion. Image quality is excellent, much crisper than I expected, and it's just ridiculously WIIIIDE!

I must admit that I'm quite jealous! I have the sigma 12 24 and love it, but can't help and fantasize about 10mm (drool.......) ;)

Maybe I'll use it for Real Estate shots. I wonder if this lady needs any help? http://www.longandfoster.com/About_Us/Agent_Profile.aspx?agtNumber=08188

This lens is my next purchase when I can afford it. I'm envious too!

I agree about the prime, though. Even Nik*n has a 10.5mm f/2.8. But then again, they also have a 200mm f/2 that Canon has nothing currently to compete with. Both of those lenses would instantly jump to the top of my list, but I guess we are in the minority. Everyone wants white zooms now.
Congrats. I am so mad I didn't go through with the coupon deal on that one.

Why not just make a 10mm or 12mm f2.8 prime?
I'd guess it's because, in general, the market wants zoom lenses more than it does prime lenses. This doesn't hold true for everyone, nor for every focal length, but it is true for most people, and for most focal lengths. It's why 70-200mm zooms far, far outsell 135mm primes (even though the prime is usually significantly faster), and why wide angle to short tele zooms far outsell 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm primes (again, even though the primes tend to be faster and optically superior).
As for making it an f/2.8 lens, a stop of additional speed is generally not as important in an ultra-wide angle lens, as it is in, say, a long tele lens. After all, a 10mm lens can be handheld at much slower shutter speeds than can a long lens. And even at f/2.8, depth of field is going to be quite extensive. Not saying a larger maximum aperture is worthless on an ultra-wide angle lens, just that it's usually not as high a priority as it would be on a longer lens. So the additional size, weight, and price might not be worth it to most people.
Canon's giving the market what it wants. Can't fault them for that. Sure, Canon offers some exotic lenses for which there's minimal demand - often for prestige value - but the company's gotta draw the line somewhere.
Maybe there will eventually be a 10mm or 12mm f/2.8 prime. Maybe. But it'd likely be a comparatively slow seller, so you shouldn't expect Canon to make the introduction of this lens a high priority.
And make it standard EOS mount vs. EF-S?
If it were in the EF mount, it'd have to cover the 24x36mm format of traditional 35mm photography, instead of the much smaller format of Canon's 1.6x pseudo-crop factor digital SLR sensors.
Such a lens would presumably be somewhat larger and heavier, and much more expensive, than an EF-S version.
