Hi,

Need some feedback here. First time shooting fashion. What have I done right and wrong?

I quite like the first two, because of the lighting. The 2nd two not so much for me.

I like the first one although the model looks a little unconfortable. I agree wit tim the second two do nothing for me.

Hate to be brutally honest but this is the Critique Corner. This is not anything close to fashion. The first two are really bad headshots and the last two are stripper pics. The subject has the same pouty/pissed off expression in every picture and the angles do not suit her. These were all taken at eye level which does not flatter the subject either. Her best feature is her eyes so a few of these should have been taken from slightly above eye level which accentuates them. Her bangs are uneven and distracting and look much better pulled off her face as in pic 3 and you had the right idea with an "S" pose in that pic although it is not done correctly.

If you shoot with her again, I would pull the bangs off her forehead, put her in more fashionable and attractive clothes that benefit her, not blatantly expose her. I would also bounce a gold reflector off her to give her a warmer tone, but thats just me. Keep shooting ;)

2112 have you ever heard the phrase, "Constructive Critism". Talk about tearing someone down. #1 I think is a great shot. As for the rest she needs to get more looks, maybe like a quirky smile of some sort or something. For your first try though I think you did pretty good.

Sure and thats what I did. It means you critique and then point out things that need work on as I did. Its not like I just told him they all suck and not give any basis for my criticism.

Out of the four, the first one screams more "fashion" than the other three. Just a note, if you look up "fashion" in the dictionary, one of the definitions (and probably the one you are striving for) is "The style characteristic of the social elite". Honestly, none of these shots really say "social elite" to me...

For a first timer, though, you are definitely on the right track. You do have a good eye...

Another tip that I try to use for my fashion shots, and one of the key factors in fashion photography, is the setting that you're shooting in. The background is very important, as it has to portray a connection between the model and his/her surroundings... for a shot like this with the clothes she's wearing, I'd personally hang some light sheets (white) behind her, to give it that "royalty" and "roman" feeling... I'd drape them and tie them in the middle with maybe a gold rope? You know the look that I have in mind? The "curtain" or "drapes" look when they're tied open... You could easily pick up the gold rope at your local arts and crafts store for a couple of US dollars...

Just my $0.02...

The first two are nice though maybe lacking a little oomph. Try boosting the contrast a little.

The second two to my mind suffer from having no atmosphere and are strangely cropped for what i think you were trying to acheive. Try full length or upper torso. To me the model looks as though she has tried for the first two and then got totally fed up. For very pale models like her I think you need a darker background or if trying for the high key look, white. Grey adds to the sadness.

Hope those are taken as consructive

This is the critique corner so harsh criticism is valid.

The first one is the best because the hair has life and the model doesn't look like she had somewhere she would rather be. The others are no fun; the model has no energy and simply stands there blankly letting the clothes basically hang off her.

Thank you for your comments! I can handle harsh criticis. I was looking for it. I'll try harder next time :) We had a makeup artist scheduled but she called in sick so we hade to do the best... The model wasn't experienced either...

2112 shared valid thoughts, what's the point of coddling people, we aren't in diapers anymore.

I liked the first two ok, the background on the third and fourth don't jive with her skin tone, and the poses weren't really dynamic enough to suit her for a dynamic shot, and not sullen or whatever enough for subdued shot.
