I don't use it much, but when I do it's fantastic. I could never sell it for this reason, though it doesn't get the use it deserves and I've thought of selling it a few times. Nope. Won't do it.

This is a lens I couldn't wait to get. Once it arrived, it turned out to be everything I expected except my favorite lens. Part of the problem for me is that 200mm is not quite long enough for most of my railroad photography, and with a 2X TC on it, it becomes a mediocre performer. The 100-400L has been a much better choice for what I do.

Having said that, don't ever ask me to give up the 70-200. For the situations where it can be used, it is incredible.

Leo,

I'm glad that you got what you expected. It's a fantastic piece of glass and it's my favorite lens. I shoot a lot of indoor concerts and as long as there's enough light to shoot above 1/125th, I get great images.

Congrats.

Exactly the same here.

I love mine and as for the "Heavy" part of things goes I almost aways use a monopod. Then it's weightless.

I had the same experience as Bemondo, except for the trains. For wildlife the 100-400 is more usefull.

i just got this lens as well. it does everything i expected and i expected a lot!

i shot two games over the weekend for anyone interested. every shot (1st links of rugby and bball) were taken hand held with this lens and an MKII. i had funnnn.

http://www.thebigpicture.ws/sports.html

enjoy it. definitely sacrifice a few hundred ISO to feel the freedom roaming with it in hand held mode. helps build the forearms as well!

cheers from Amsterdam

Thanks for the replies guys... (my intention was only to say thanks..)

I thought that 200mm was going to be too short, but the truth is that it fits my current needs (portraits, walk around lens + some work-out while hand holding it).

I also took some shoots in a soccer game (indoors), results were so-so... but not because of the lense or the DRebel, it was because of human being behind the view finder :)

Anyway... the DRebel, the 50mm, the 70-200 and the 420EX are more than enough for now. Next steps are practice, practice, practice and keep practing....

Congrats, it's a great lense. I have been experimenting at different focal lenghts and aperatures trying to find a sweet spot, and so far it's all sweet. I haven't come across a weekness.

Enjoy!

Take good care of it, Leo. You WILL enjoy it. Just make sure someone else doesn't think they want to enjoy it more than you do.

Expect to get a few interesting stares when you drag it out in public. I usually get a few.

Did you get the IS or non-IS?

Congratulations on your purchase, whether it be the IS version or non IS. Both are great.

You'll look for many excuses and reasons just to use it. It's very versatile so it makes it easier.

It's next on my list - could have used it this weekend at a horse show. The 100-400 was good, and the 24-70 was good, but the 70-200 would have been great! I'd still be using the other two most of the time, but when you need it, you need it.

That's for sure. Along with the IS non IS versions, I wish they would make a black version. It gets stares everytime I use it in public. Most people think that the focal length is much longer than it is, probably due to the size.

The other funny comment I get is "are you a professional photographer?" . If only they saw my photos they would know that I'm not.

I got the non-IS.....

When the light is not the best, I bump the ISO and clean it later with Noise Ninja. Maybe someday I'll get the IS version, but so far.. I haven't miss it... :)

I should've done this when I got the lense... :)

Thanks for all the replies guys... I am enjoying this lense as much as I was a few months back when I bought it. Last Saturday we had an activity at the office and they asked me to take the pictures. When I was going around with the lense, everybody thought I was a professional.... :)

As SolPics said... "If only they saw my photos they would know that I'm not." :D

I'm practicing a lot thought... maybe in 10 or 20 years... :D

I have the non-IS version as well. It's a great lens. I would probably love the IS if I had it, but I got into this lens for under $900 and I just couldn't convince myself that the IS was worth $6-700 more.

I love my 70-200. I don't know if I have a great copy or a great copy of my 2xMkII but for me that combo works well.

I'm glad I read this thread. I see that CDS does theatre shooting and that is the kind of light I will be shooting when my daughter does figure skating competitions. She has one coming up soon so I'm going to dig deep and get me this lens. Thanks for all of the info people.
