Thanks for the notice. Any thoughts on the DNG format? Seems like duplication to me.

For at least the 1Ds RAW format you end up with smaller file sizes using DNG than you do with canon RAW tif files.

Thanks for the notice. Any thoughts on the DNG format? Seems like duplication to me.The DNG format is a standard RAW format, for which the specification is freely available (you can download the specs from Adobe's website).

Formats like Canon's CRW and CR2, Nikon's NEF, etc., are all proprietary formats, and the companies don't give the specification for their standards to anybody. When, someday, a company decides to invent a new format and drops the old format, the old format will become obsolete and in a few years time it will become difficult to find software that can still read the old format. Canon already did this, they switched to CR2 !!

With the new DNG you can include the raw file which will give you a larger file on conversion to DNG however it can be extracted if you need the raw file at a later date. To include the raw on conversion you select it in the DNG preferences.
