View Full Version : 5D mkII CONFIRMED out by end of year!
Stealthy Ninja
3rd of September 2008 (Wed), 05:05
I put this in rumours because that is what it is, but it is a very, very strong rumour confirmed by a trust worthy source.
Anyway, according to this source, by the end of the year:
1. a new model will be released.
2. it's not a new camera (like the 1000D was)
3. it's not the 1Dn MkIII
Basically he was confirming indirectly to me that the 5D MkII would be out by the end of the year (we were talking about the 5D when this came up).
We all sort of suspect this, but this is a confirmation from a source... connected to Canon let's say (don't want to get anyone in trouble).
This thread is NOT a joke!

Well, since everyone is always wondering if the 5D MkII will really come out or not, I thought people would like to know it will be here by the end of the year for sure.

Exactly... at this point no one needs a "source" to strongly hint to them that the 5D Mark II is coming out by the end of the year. That's not to say you don't in fact have an actual source, because just like everyone else here, I really have no clue if you do or not.
But the rumor mill is at full steam lately, and if Canon doesn't announce the 5D Mark II at Photokina, well... I think a lot of people will cry (myself included)

1. a new camera will be released.
2. it's not a new camera
:D
Funny how you summed it up :)
I guess he meant not a new line of cameras like the 1000D, although it won't be named 5DII (which has been a persistent rumour for a long time, that the "Mark" designations will be always reserved for 1D/1Ds series exclusively). So I read that as it being named 3D, 4D, 6D, 7D...etc.
If they name it 6D (or 4D), that will make it easier to think of it as a direct successor to the 5D. If they name it 3D with vastly higher features, it could still be thought of as a successor of 5D but IF they choose to stop updating the 1D series (1.3x), then such a 3D might be considered as a replacement for both 5D & 1DmkIII with intermediate features & price.

There is no doubt that 5D Mk II will be announced this month. And it will have extremely good noise at high ISO, and it should cost similarly as the Nikon D700. The only question is its spec, such as 15MP or 21MP?

The guy I was talking to THOUGHT it would be 16MB... but that was just his guess.
Edit: To all you who have obviously read 1000 rumours about the 5D and are getting sick of them. Please just stop posting trash and walk away from the rumours section. This has been a public service announcement. :p

I would also guess 16MP (so that it has about the same pixel density as the 1D Mk III). But since 50D came out with 15 MP, so I am wondering if Canon will make it 15 MP instead (similar to Nikon's camera: 12 MP for both full frame and APS-C cameras).
If 5D Mk II came out with 15 MP, its noise per pixel at high ISO should be about 1 stop better than Nikon's D3.

I hate to say this - being marketting cynical that I am - but another possibility is that he could be completely using you to spread "product buzz"...... sort of like a viral web campaign. He knows you'll run right back to POTN and report the latest - with no facts, credible information or anything at all substantial.
I've lost track of how many people have walked down this same road. It costs them nothing, but gets people to hesitate from buying the competitor's product if they think "something is just around the corner from Canon ."
But you ARE correct. One day there will be an updated model ;)

Yeah, it's weird. Some people seem to get off dissing everyone who comes up with a rumour.
I think it's just that everyone has read the "new 5D" rumor about 1,000 times too many now, and they're tired of wasting any more time hearing "new information" on what it "definitely might be, maybe". They need something new to get excited about. How about a new 100-400 fixed f4L lens? That might get a more positive response.

Hi..
Some news from Spain ... last news points out that the 5D MkII (until now they are still keeping this name) it will be offically announced by September 18th in Spain too, according to Canon Staff declarations at IFA:
http://www.quesabesde.com/noticias/sucesora-canon-eos-5d-ifa-2008,1_4513
The specs are in the order of the ones posted at the DRSL Magazine post
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=6224759&postcount=17
The source confirm that a presentation it will be take by that day although the specs are still kept secret ... they don´t confirm sensor size ... still hermetic (if 16MP rumor or finally 21 MPx) Posible video option included, not confirmed ...
Some presentation/filtration one or two days before offical annoucement is expected ...

Well...
It was a dark and stormy night. The worst typhoon in recent memory was bearing down on Hong Kong. The street were deserted and dark. But high on the side of the canon building clung a lone figure. Just visible, but only if you could see awesome. It was, THE stealthy ninja!
The stealthy ninja slowly lowered himself to be outside the window where the secret meeting of the canon illuminati were assembled. Stealthy ninja used ninja magic to turn his body into a mist (which by sheer power of will did not blow away in the gale force winds) and glided through the air-conditioning vents and into the inner sanctum, where he reformed his body into solid form. Though this is a misnomer, because he really was a shadow within a shadow.
Hanging from the ceiling he used his perfect ninja memory to overhear the following facts...
1. a new model will be released.
2. it's not a new camera (like the 1000D was)
3. it's not the 1Dn MkIII
At that point, the stealthy ninja had the information he needed. He then briefly flickered out of the shadow and into the visual spectrum of mortal men. Mortal they were to, the last thing they saw was a flash of cold steel followed by an eternity of black.
The next day all that remained was an empty room, mysterious painted red... BLOOD red!
The Canon Illuminate keep going with minions stepping up to take the place of their fallen masters.
The ninja, was NEVER seen again. If you DO see him, you have about 2 seconds to live.

You totally missed the intended pun. I suggest you go back and read the preceding posts, the topic had digressed to "towels", with the post:
I spoke to someone at Cannon the other day, but all they wanted to do was sell me towels...
Cannon Mills was a legit company that use to manufacture towels.

Okay, if this has been posted before...... Stole it from dpreview......
OK, so I heard this from a friend of mine - a reliable source.
Apparently, the words "Destined Evolution" are the phonetic translation of the Japanese words "Te Sin Ve Lu Chan" (the characters shown on the Canon Japan website), which when translated to English (loosely) means "Successor to the number 5".
So - it's confirmed - we're talking about the new 5D!!!! :)

That doesn't sound like Japanese at all. :) I looked at the site. It doesn't say anything about number 5.
I've attached a screen of it.
My Japanese is not great, but the first 2 characters mean "evolution".
Then their is "no" which is a possessive modifier (so the first thing "belongs" to the second) Then it says something like forerunner (maybe our Japanese friends here will help us).
So I think it is saying something like: "Evolution of the forerunner"

Ok, don't know which 5D rumour thread to add this one to, but here goes:
I have a tenant that works at the Canon plant and she just told me that they got word in the last month or so that Canon has stopped manufacturing the 5D. She said that it is still listed on their website, and you can still buy it from them, but they are not making any more.
She also said... that they told them that a new camera was coming to replace it but that they couldn't tell them what it is...
As rumors have been flying for over 2 years now, I took this as an extremely positive sign that the new 5D will actually be announced in the next month or so. Can you say 'P h o t o k i n a ' ? :D

That jibes with what my local "brick and mortar" connection told me...
He tells me that the only way they can restock the 5D now is body + 24-105mm f/4L IS ONLY.

yeah, I think a lot of us are going to end up in that boat. The fact that the 5d is still selling new for US$2300 indicates to me that the replacement is likely to be more than the d700. Historically (and I'm going from memory here) as it becomes obvious that a body is going to be replaced, prices of the body tend to go down and stay there (a la 40D, and the 30D +20D before that). I assume this is a combination of dealers realizing that they will be stuck with inventory when the announcement happens AND demand goes down.
As mentioned, dealers were informed over a month ago that the 5d was being discontinued (Ben horne on FM was one of many that reported this). At the higher management levels they would have also been given an indication of the new body's cost.
So, it seems highly unlikely that the new body comes out at the purported cost of US$2600, when the 5d is still selling for $2300 - particularly given the expected "upgrades".

I been looking for this thread everywhere. Same question as Adaptive, here.
Any real confirmation that the 5D2 will be released? or in other words...
What are the chances it will not be released?...
See, if Canon waited this long, then maybe they want to announce it in Photokina. If this were the case, information would have leaked up to a week or two earlier, which is about now.
Regardless of the official announcement, one thing does bother me. I know Canon has been planning to release this model for a few months now. I do not know exactly what is keeping them from it, somehow the flare of Photokina does not sound like a good argument to me. The only other thing I can think of is technical or production issues, where the embedded software is buggy, or performance below the desired levels. I have lead QA loops, and have personally seen how products can be held back for however long it is necessary, or until the communal corporate suicide is sanctioned, and everyone walks around with paperbags in their heads, pretending not to see the quality of the product they have just released.
Anyhow, I do hope they will hold it until it is ready. (And yes, the fact that the time lapse between the announcement and first batch shipment date is not enough to fix whatever issue they may have, is a bit frightening).

That is a good thing. If anyone reads about AF, please post it here. (With the existing video feature on DSLRs, you can AF prior to starting video, but then during the capture you must AF manually, using the LCD as guide. Some of the questions then,
Will this be the same?
How does the camera capture sound?
Will video mode give you Aperture Control during a capture?
Last but not least, a camera is an incredibly uncomfortable way of shooting video. Image stabilization is zip, and without being able to rest the camera on your shoulder, the shake is very noticeable (yes, even more so in HD).

Really, the video is just an 'add-on' because they can do it. It shouldn't be taken seriously. The video pipeline was already being moved around the camera for Live View functionality -- all it took was some software implementation to capture and compress the frames in to a movie. I doubt it took much R&D time or much additional hardware even if it sounds like an impressive feature. The tech was already in place with Live View.
They added a mic on the front and a mic port for audio, but you're absolutely right, it is not ergonomic for shake-free video at all.
