3rd time shooting this monstrous doom/metal band from Japan, and the 2nd time w/ the ferociously talented Michio Kurihara on guitar. this guy rips, and i pretty much love everything he's been associated w / (damon & naomi, ghost, white heaven, stars, etc).
shooting notes. no flash except for the 1st shot. shot the 1st couple of songs pressed (!) against the stage, then fled for safe harbor to the side of the stage. used the 5D and also tested out my friend's 40D. i thought the focusing ability of that body was an improvement as compared to my 30D and 5D.

Boris + Narlus = BOSS! Always love it when you shoot these guys. 4-6 are my faves. I suck at critique.
Oh and thanks for the comment on the 40D...interesting as I use the 30D/5D as well.

Phew! These are awesome. 1 (did you catch someone's flash on this?), 5, & 7 do it for me.
Canon appears to be catching back up with Nikon with the recent wave of cameras -- I'm totally considering switching back after my recent/ongoing experience with Nikon service (they have had my 24-70 for 17 days, and its still untouched).

ah, good catch! i edited my post as i realized that i definitely used flash for that 1st one. last time they played there were 'No Flash' signs all over, but there was no such direction this time. that said, the band had their own photographer w/ them, and a friend of mine who shot them in NYC said that that guy told some shooters who used flash for Torche (the opener) to stop using it. as there was no photo pit here, he didn't say anything to me when i was up front, nor when i was sidestage. thanks for the comments!

wow, that's really slow. i'm dreading that i will need to return my 5D back to Canon, since there is still something not quite right with it. i definitely need it back no later than thurs the 18th for ATP/NY, and will likely send it in monday after the MMJ show. i'm kinda taking a chance here...

Diversified set... Each picture has it's own composition merrits...
I really like #2 and would crop it vertical... The double neck guitarist and drum set, would suffice...
The double neck guitar reminds me of John McLaughlin of the Mahavisnu Orchestra... (He was my neighbor, during my teen yrs.)

Nice shots - great job of capturing the energy. Love 1 and 7. Good luck with your 5D, btw - mine's been there since mid July and I'd be freaking if I didn't have a loaner.

#4, 7 and 8 for me.
Kinda confusing set: Some "serene" (#4, 5) images, some very "not serene" (#7, 8 )...

Number 1 is awesome.
Interested to hear more about your thoughts of the 40 over the 5. I cannot make my mind which one to get.

most double necked guitars are guitars (one 12 string, one 6). Takeshi's is a guitar, and a bass body. i wanted to keep #2 landscape in order to also get the lovely Wata in the frame.

ugh. yeah, i will take my chances and not send it in if they can't guarantee a loaner.

that's the Boris conundrum...very gentle waves of ambient noise, followed by brutal eruptions of molten metal.

i did think the AF worked a bit better on the 40D, but the image quality and high ISO performance of the 5D was still better. plus, in the small clubs the full-frame really helps.

nice work. 4 is an amazing shot. i like 1 and 5 a lot too. 7 is good but i'm a bit bothered by the cut of drum stick that has something on the end of it. i want to see that something.

Glad Michael brought this back as I missed it! I need to come out there with my two 1DMIII's and let you try one! I'll check on the airfare but you gotta' take me shooting so I can deduct it! :-) Oh, super set ... I remember these guys from before and this is the best you've posted of them.

We'll have to do a Boston meet-up then!

Actually it's doable if someone can put me up for a couple of days, but my schedule is so tight I can't see straight until December!

These pictures make me want to go see this band, and I have never even heard them. I would say that means you did your job well.
