I got this lens a couple of days ago and haven't had the time to test it 'till a few minutes ago. I think it's a keeper.

It's a sweet lens -- 85/1.2 is even sweeter!

there was an L 1.2 on the shelf when I got the 1.8...............VERY tempting but there are still two other lenses on my "MUST buy" list.

Great ...
Unfortunately, my wife has put some kind of moratorium on any expensive (> 200$) lens purchases
Still, I have a Jupiter 9 85/2.0 M42 screwmount lens coming that I bought on eBay yesterday for 30$ ... my first try with MF lenses, hope it'll work out...
Best regards,
Andy

I have the one point eight also, and LOVE it! :D
The difference between this and the 1.2 is what? Half a stop? No big deal to me.
I've also read reviews where the 1.8 compares very favorably in testing comparison to the 1.2, as well as mangaging focus a tad faster,
Congrats on your new lens Gramps.

I have been considering to let my 50mm 1.8 go, and aquire a 85 1.8.
I tend to like the long ended lenses.
Have you taken any other images?

I think you should consider the 85 1.8 in ADDITION to the 50. This way you'll have TWO sharp primes at an affordable cost. ;)

No others yet. I was asked to shot the local high school girls basketball game tonight, the 85 1.8 will get the real test then.

@ Gramps - Sounds like a plan. Can't wait to see the results. Have fun.

Congrats Gramps. I got one about a week or so ago and did one portrait shoot with it-very nice images, however I got the last one that B and H had in stock, and I think it had been returned before, because the manual focus ring was very sloppy and it had some sort of scratch marks around the second element retaining ring. I tried to justify keeping it, because the other places I called were out of stock, but the sloppy focus ring just annoyed me to no end, so I sent it back yesterday. I'll probably try again soon. How is your focus ring?

The faster focusing of the 1.8 was a big consideration in getting it. I want in mainly for basketball. Of course the 1.8 helps a bunch also.

Actually it's more than a stop.
Your shutter speed with the f/1.2 is gonna be 2.25 times faster than with the f/1.8
f/1.7 is one stop slower than the f/1.2
Cheers

Gramps,
I would like to see the results with the 85 1.8 also.
I am considering this lens for the same use.

Its a full stop faster but no more. f/1.0 to f/1.4 is a stop. f/1.4 to f2.0 is a stop. f/1.2 is halfway between 1 and 1.4. f/1.8 is halfway between 1.4 and 2.0 so....
Anyway, the 1.2 is nicer glass and slower to focus. the 1.8 is way cheaper and way faster to focus and still one of the sharpest out there. Which shows you just how sharp the 1.2 is.

Is it just me, or is this lens hard to get right now? Maybe because it's basketball season, or maybe something newer coming out? B&H and KEH are both out of stock on it for over a week now. B&H being out of stock for that long makes me think something is up. I ended up ordering it from Adorama. Hopefully they come through so I'll have it for the weekend.

Ok, we're splitting hairs here, but Doc's right. f/1.8 is more than half a stop slower than f/1.4, so it's more than a full stop from f/1.2 to f/1.8. f/1.8 is 1-1/3 to 1-1/4 stops slower than f/1.2.

Yep doc's 'about' right .
I'm too dumb to do the reciprocal rubbish needed to work it out but i do know that f1.8 is 2/3rds of a stop above f1.4 (not half )

I was just working on the theory that as 1.2 is half a stop slower than 1.4 and 1.8 half a stop faster then the difference is 1 stop. I'm not good enough to use math, particularly when it comes to ratios. :) I'd love to see the calculation though so I can work it out myself if I've been doing it wrong all along.

Is there such a thing as an F0.5 lens, or any other lens <1? IIRC it's just a ratio of length to width, so it should be possible... but i've forgotten some of my basic photography lessons.
DocFrankenstein

The ratio of the squares of the apertures tells you how much faster one shutter speed is gonna be compared to the other one.
IE: You want to know how much faster the lens is at aperture of 1.6 than at the aperture of 3.7
(3.7^2)/(1.6^2)=5.348 times faster
for the number of stops take the log with base of square root of 2
tim: there are some Zeiss f/0.7 lenses floating around on ebay

The DOF on a F0.7 lens would make it very, very difficult to work with. Maybe for shots of things a distance from the camera it'd be ok.

The other day I was shown a 0.9 lens at the local camera shop. The owner claimed it to be the "worlds fastest lens", it was on a rengefinder camera.

Canon had an f/0.95 Leica screw mount lens for their RF line way back when. The f/0.7 Zeiss lenses were originally made for NASA so they could photograph the dark side of the moon. Dunno what they were thinking; even the back of the moon has a daytime.
