My girlfriend has given me an Adobe CS3 Master Collection, I don't need to install the entire (hugh) system. I already have Adobe reader, and I need the Photoshop CS3 to continue photography work. Here's a list of whats available on the disk, and I hope someone can tell me what I should install for photo work.
Thanks
ACROBAT 8 PRO
AFTER EFFECTS CS3
CONTRIBUTE CS3
DREAMWEAVER CS3
ENCORE CS3 FIREWORKS CS3
FLASH CS3

Depends what you do apart from photography I suppose. Can't see any others for use for photography work, maybe Illustrator for some fancy graphics.

Damn! I bet that wasn't a cheap DVD(s).
I suppose only Photoshop... Maybe Dreamweaver if you want to make a website for your pics.

You'd almost be better off returning it if possible and getting Photoshop CS3 alone and adding LightRoom 2.

I would install the whole thing. But if your worried about space, Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign would be all worth while even for photography.
If you are really worried about space, buy another harddrive and run it off that drive.

Am I the only cynic who doubts that someone was given a $2400 software suite (ok 1200 if you're a student...) who doesn't actually need most of it; but it just happens to be one of the most pirated suites around :)? I know folks on this forum always act like everyone has CS3 and everyone paid for it; but I suspect reality for many may be different. Apologies to the OP for my cynicism if it's all legit; if so I second the notion of returning it and getting Lightroom 2+ Photoshop or indeed for most people Lightroom 2 + Elements.
Be aware CS4 coming out on the 23rd if you have any intentions of changing options.

Oh you're such a cynic. No one pirates software anymore, do they?
(Cue story about girlfriend's rich dad and Amex Black card...)

^I questioned it as well that as much as I'd love to have all that I'd rather return it and get a really nice piece of glass or 3 even.
As for the pirated thing, well duh. Somehow I can suspect that perhaps she got it from a friend, ya know, at a discounted price. ;) (burned CDs people, nothing else. Mind out of gutter)
As many computer people here as well aside from just photographers, the reality of people having pirated software here is definitely on the upper level. Although, is it any different using Ares, Kazaa, etc to download songs? (it's rhetorical)

Interesting question and I'd say yes. Pirating software is more serious when the software stolen is then used to produce work that profits for the pirater. If you download music, you may or may not have bought that music. You may get some enjoyment out of it and yes you are committing a crime and stealing from the artist... but you do not then additionally profit from their artistic work like many here might with pirated software.
It really is unnecessary too since Canon provides sufficient converting tools and GIMP is free.

So this is on the level of like 1st degree murder and 2nd degree where one is planned and the other is a fight that leads to someone dying. While in the end you still killed someone, one is not quite as bad?
While you still technically stole something(which laws right now there are loop holes etc until Congress finally decides on this new bill thus why technically can be used but not actually) because one may or may not make profit from it it because minor or major. What about all the borrowed copies of Microsoft Office and other programs with the ability to use over and over and over although it says not to?
I'm not trying to justify, but stealing is still stealing. It's up to the person and their conscious really.

Treat the taking of software the same way you want your images taken from you.

Yes, I agree. Ninjas and pirates are natural enemies.
Now, off to some torrent site somewhere to lay in wait...

Adobe is getting more sly when it comes to pirated software. If you dont owe the software, the registration code you input in will be kicked back in a few days and you will be locked out of the program.
Use of the education versions is also not for commercial use.

I assume you mean the program will send a little message to adobe informing a naughty pirate is being evil.
I read somewhere that photoshop is one of the most pirated softwares in the world.

It's nice to see that we're all so qualified to judge whether the OP is telling the truth or whether he/she is a lying thief. My wife has in the past spent ridiculous amounts of money buying me something she thinks I'll like, and sometimes these things are completely outlandish. I don't even see the point of all this holier-than-thou pontification of the legitimacy of the software at hand, especially not since it's unlikely to be verified any time soon.
"Web nerd" comments aside, Stealthy Ninja pretty much has the answer covered, anyway.

For your needs, I'd recommend Acrobat Pro, Illustrator for any sort of text or graphics, and Indesign, very good for composing for example a collage or series of pictures on a page.

Hey, I'm a web nerd too. :)
Nerds are awesome. I saw this film once, one time, where Nerds got their revenge. I think it was called... Revenge of the, something...

And its quality was such that it may have been made with pirated software! And the sequels went downhill rapidly.
As for me, everything on our systems is duly licensed and registered. Hell, I even pay for shareware.
To the OP, besides PhotoShop, you would probably find Acrobat 8 useful (same version I use).

You can download a demo and try software. If you think you'll use it, pay for it.
If not. Get one of the free alternatives (like THe Hoff said). That's what I do.

I'd bet that 99.999% of the people who pirate PS use it for 10 minutes and give up. I think most people pirate for the thrill of being part of a group.

Not sure if it taddles on you to adobe, however there will be a pop up window appears saying the validation code entered is not valid, please re-enter it or visit the site to buy a new one. I am talking CS3 only.

I would download Acrobat, Illustrator, InDesign and PS of course. I don't use Illustrator or InDesign a whole lot, but when I need them, I need them and they are invaluable.

I have the Creative Suite 3 - Design Standard installed on my personal PC and use the Premium Design Suite at the office. I work in the marketing department of a huge real estate company and regularly do flyers, brochures, multi-page booklets and sometimes web graphics. The reason I have the CS3 Design Standard suite at home is I often take home work on the weekends.
Having two kids still in college I legitimately buy "educational" packaged software. (Hell, I can't afford $2499, or even $999!). I know that "technically" the software is not to be used for "commercial use", but it's installed on the family computer and belongs to one of my college student kids, not the company I work for.
Bottom line is, unless you are doing graphic design work, all you need for photography is Photoshop and/or Lightroom. And, Acrobat Pro is always a useful thing to have on any computer. That Master Collection is severe overkill.
