View Full Version : GT2932 or 190CXPRO3 - yes, another tripod question

I've got a budget of about $300-$350 for tripod legs. I was semi-set on the basalt Gitzo legs, until I went to B&H and played with them. They are light, but they flex a lot compared to the CF legs - much less stiff. They also appear to damp vibrations much less well (mind you, this was a leg-twang, nothing scientific). I was considering the GT1932 and the 2932. There's little weight difference and and only $50 in price.

The B&H guy suggested getting the Manfrotto 190CXPRO3 instead - it's CF with Mg fittings. The Manfrotto is 0.2 kg lighter than the 2932 and is 'rated' for half the max (5 vs 10 kg of the 2932). I think I prefer the Gitzo G-lock to the quick releases on the Manfrotto, but not to the point that it'll significantly influence my decision.

Let me add the Feisol CT-3301 (w/column) to the mix, as per jhom's suggestion. It's about the same specs as the Gitzo and ~$250.

I'm nowhere near the max weight on either at the moment, but my next big purchace, assuming wifely acceptance, is the 70-200 f/2.8L. I assume that, generally, a higher max weight will be more stable, but the flexy-ness of the basalt legs concerns me a little. Do any of you uber-experienced types have a preference or another possibility for me to consider. I'm generally against Chinese knockoffs, so no Benzo. :p

Finally, since I've been lurking for awhile now, I've learned tons of good info. Thanks to all for info and advice.

Im sorry but Gitzo all the way! And personally between the three I would go with the GT2932 as its a bit stronger yet pretty much the same size.

Don't be sorry! I need the advice and you undoubtedly know more than I do about the subject. Not that it would be hard to know more than I do. :p

I have a basalt tripod - GT 2941 which is a discontinued last years model with 4 sections instead of 3 but essentially the same thing.

There indeed is a lot of "twang" when you tap on one of the legs. It doesn't bother me much though - I could put a heavier load on the center column for stability if I need it. I put that exact lens + 40D on my tripod on 20-30 mph wind at Bryce Canyon fully extended, and there was no image degradation due to vibration. Cars/Motorcycle engine vibration on the road is another big source of vibration photographing in the city - no problem there either.

You might want to consider a Feisol.

thanks for the suggestion. Maybe the CT-3301? With the center column, that's about $260, which is still in the same ballpark as the other two. I'll look into it, too. Are there any brick and mortar dealers to actually see one? B&H and Adorama don't seem to carry them.
