Hey, quick question. I got a 20D and 580 EX.....was going to use my 8 year rebel as a back up....do you think the 580EX would work on the rebels hot shoe?

All the EX series flash's should revert back to TTL metering when put on an older EOS body.
The key word here is "SHOULD"

ETTL was first introduced in the EOS ELAN II in 1995 so if your Rebel is more recent than that, it should have ETTL. If so, the 580EX will work just fine with it.

Well, my 550EX will work with Type-B cameras (non ETTL EOS cameras) in TTL mode so I image 580EX would, too, but don't quote me on that since I don't have the 580EX.
