I have bought Canon 400 2.8 L IS few months back and mainly am shooting sports. I am right now using a 190 X ProB tripod for that lens but I would like recommendations for a good solid tripod/monopod for this lens.
I am using a 20D and 40D mainly for this lens. I tried using the lens on a monopod but due to weight I can't get good images. Hence, I need your suggestions for that.

For sports, usually a monopod.
A large Gitzo carbon fiber seems to be the norm for this beast, without a head, only a QR if desired.
If a head is needed, only the RRS tilt only head for monopods shuld be used.
for tripod, go for the Gitzo GT3530.
I like the leveling base and a good gimbel head or a Markins M20 with a Sidekick.
Here's my short list I recommend for the 500mm and 600mm wildlife shooters.

You'll need a differnt Kenisis bag from the one I recommended for your 400mm I think,,. and the tripod foot won't the 400mm either. The rest is on topic.

I would recommend a Gitzo GM5541 monopod. Most sports shooters do not use a tripod for shooting sports. However, for other shooting a 3 series Gitzo is highly recommended. The head depends on your needs. You have many choices including Markins, RRS and Wimberley.
