I love shooting with my Canon 20D in the RAW format, given the editing control it provides. However rather than use Canon's Digital Photographer software I much prefer Adobe Photoshop. Problem - my copy of Photoshop Elements 3 does not seem to read Canon's RAW format. Question - is there a plug-in available to enable PS to read Canon RAW formats?

Element isnt going to be as powerful/versitle as say Photoshop CS ( Which supports Raw, especially the 20D with the latest plugin update 2.4, and is considered more 'professional' ), I dont belive that adobe plans to have any official support for raw at all in elements. Least thats what I heard from an adobe rep who was boasting Elements 3.

I just checked the Adobe web site. Elements 3 does support Raw, but I think you need to download the latest version (2.4) of the Camera Raw plug in for the 20d files. It was just released yesterday. Check the website for downloads

There is something strange happening with the plugin.
If i use it with PSE3 elements, I can only use some of the features in respect to using the same plugin in PS CS (for example the advanced button is not visible in PSE3). And sharpening works different.

Is there anyway to get the PSCS behaviour also on PSE 3?

And sharpening works different. That's not strange, Adobe did it on purpose! PS Elements, and also Camera Raw in PS Elements, does not contain the full functionality of Photoshop CS (and Camera Raw in PS CS). If it would have everything available in PS CS, there would not be any reason anymore to buy the much more expensive PS CS...

So, you can't make Camera Raw in PS Elements 3.0 work exactly the same as in PS CS.

Jesper,

But is the SAME plugin I'm using, so somewhere inside the plugin it asking if the host is PSE3 or PSCS, if we could only fix that!

I use PSE 3, and was using the Canon Raw format that was already inlcuded in the software. Now that there is this new version (2.4) what are the advantages of updating and downloading this new version? I am not experiencing any problems with the verison already inlcuded in the PSE 3 software. Am I going to get added functions or editing tools? I have a 20D. Thanks.

The version of Camera Raw that came with your copy of PS Elements 3 is probably version 2.3. That version does read RAW files from the 20D, but this is not "officially supported". Camera Raw 2.4 is the first version that officially supports the 20D. There is no additional functionality in v2.4, so there's not that much difference between v2.3 and v2.4.

According to the readme:

1. Support for new cameras:
- Canon EOS 20D, PowerShot S70, PowerShot G6, EOS-1Ds Mark II
- Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D / DYNAX 7D, DiMAGE A200

2. Bug fixes / new features:
- Settings which are actively being edited are preserved when using the spacebar hand tool shortcut.
- Removed the magenta highlights seen on images with negative exposure from the Canon 1D Mark II.

Oh ok, thanks Jesper, well since it supports the 20D, then Im definetly going to download it. Not to go too off topic here, but are there any good free plug ins available for PSE 3? I know there's the FM plugins but you have to pay for them. Considering that I dont have PSCS yet, I'm just looking for some cool editing tools and effects that I can use w/PSE 3. Thanks.

I'm using a PC - running MS XP 2 on a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, and MS XP 2 on a custom built desktop, as well as MS 2000 on another custom built desktop.

ExPOSED - try this post - I linked a plugin for PSE3 that includes Curves and other great tools. In addition, there is info on the same website that discusses how to convert color profiles in PSE3.
