Here are a few I took of the Brian Jonestown Massacre on Saturday night at the Hifi Bar in Melbourne.

It was one of the most challenging shoots I have done for a while - my comments about it and links to more shots from the night can be seen at http://blog.blackshadow.com.au/2008/09/brian-jonestown-massacre-the-lovetones/

The shots are of the BJM frontman Anton Newcombe who is as notorious for his erratic behaviour as he is for the finely crafted psychedelic music he makes.

C&C encouraged.

holy crap is that harsh light to shoot in. given the conditions, you did a great job. 4, 5 are nice shots.

Can't wait for Rene to come by and nail you for "blocking up in the blues!" :-) You do shoot some interesting personalities, eh? Not a bad set considering the light. #3 is unusually nice.

Yep, those deep down ACR blues...you could almost write a song about that.

Richard...solid set, I love the expression in #1.

Was the lighting really like that? Led or Moving head with blue filter?

That's about the most impossible combo: Thàt blue, and a tungsten light with magenta or red from the other side...

#4 is quite nice.

Yes Rene the lighting was really like that! Blue filtered light.

Anton Newcombe (the founder and main man of the band) was standing far left of stage under very dim blue light.

Thanks for the comments.

The place was packed to the rafters, no photo pit so unable to move around once I had staked a spot (well before the support band) and then I had to put up with wankers who deliberately kept putting their hands and a sweat shirt in front of my lens.

oh mate! I feel your pain; I just shot a band at HiFi bar on Sat night.
Pity there's no pit at hifi.. but i guess its more of a venue to get a good crowd into rather than geared to allow access to photogs and whatnot.

LOVE the close up on the VOX tailplate; guitarist should have kept the tremelo arm on the guitar in my opinion though - even if he doesn't use it.. just seeing it there looks hot!

Thanks moonwings. I think the HiFi has become my least favourite venue to shoot at in Melbourne. Who were you shooting there?

These fellow have fascinated me ever since seeing DiG - so talented, and so self destructive. I'm a sucker for memorable facial expressions and smoke, so naturally my favs are #1 and #8.

I have shot most venues in Melbourne from Ding Dong Lounge through to Rod Laver or Telstra Dome. A couple of weeks ago I shot John Mellencamp at Rod Laver then headed over to The Tote for the Tame Impala EP launch.

And thanks donnymac
